Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies, M.A.

Location(s): Main Campus


The Master of Arts degree in Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies is designed for graduate students who wish to pursue advanced study toward the Ph.D. degree; teach in community colleges, secondary, or elementary schools; or work as professionals in private agencies or government service.

Admission to the Program

Requirements for admission are

  • a baccalaureate in Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies or a related field, with at least 12 upper-division units in Chicana/o and/or Latina/o Studies or related field, and
  • a grade point average of 2.75 or above in the last 60 semester units of coursework at an accredited institution.
  • Students who lack the 12 upper-division unit requirements for admission can be considered for conditional admission, and if accepted would be required to take CLS 3400 and one CLS 4000-level course that does not count towards their masters; both courses must be completed with a B (3.0) average or better during the first year of the program. 

Applicants are required to submit a University Admissions Application through Cal State Apply and calculate their last 60-semester unit GPA. Cal State Apply will require

  • an application,
  • statement of purpose,
  • three recommendation letters (at least two academic references and an additional letter may include employment/volunteer supervisors), and
  • transcripts (from accredited degree granting institution) by the Department deadline stipulated on the Graduate Studies Office website.  Official transcripts must also be sent to Student Affairs 101 before the set deadline.

Requirements for the Degree (30 units)


A total of 30 units are required, with at least 15 units in 5000-level courses.

Directed Electives (9 or 12 units)


Complete remaining course work to satisfy the degree requirement from the following list. Any course that has been taken to satisfy the core unit can not be double-counted to satisfy the elective credits. 
CLS 5990 students select 9 units;
CLS 5960 students must complete 12 units of electives.
 

Culminating Experience (0 or 3 units)


A comprehensive examination, a thesis or a project is required for the master’s degree. Complete one course below.
