Overview
Cal State L.A. is a comprehensive public university that supports a broad array of educator preparation programs that prepare candidates to work in diverse urban settings. The College of Education is comprised of three departments:
California has a two-tiered credentialing system for teachers.
- Preliminary programs prepare candidates to obtain an initial teaching credential through successful completion of required coursework, fieldwork, and a performance demonstration of their knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- The second tier of preparation is a two-year job-embedded individualized induction program. Individuals holding a Preliminary General Education (Multiple or Single Subject) or Education Specialist teaching credential are required by Education Code §44259(c) (2) to complete a Commission-approved Induction program to earn the Clear teaching credential.
1. General Education Teaching Credential
Students can earn a multiple-subject or a single-subject teaching credential as post-baccalaureate (graduate) or as undergraduate students.
Post-Baccalaureate (Graduate) Prorams
The Multiple Subject Teaching Credential authorizes the holder to teach all subjects in a self-contained classroom, such as the classrooms in most elementary schools, in grades preschool, K-12, or in classes organized primarily for adults.
The single-subject teaching credential with authorization in single-subject instruction qualifies holders to teach in their authorized field at any grade level, preschool, kindergarten, and grades 1 through 12, or in classes organized primarily for adults. Eleven categories of single-subject instruction are defined by state legislation as follows: agriculture, art, business, English, health science, industrial and technological education, languages (including, but not limited to, Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Spanish), natural science (biological sciences, chemistry, geoscience or physics), mathematics, music, physical education, and social science.

Undergraduate Programs
Multiple Subject Credential + Bachelor of Arts degree + Subject Matter Waiver Program
Undergraduate students earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in the following fields may choose to earn a Multiple Subject Credential concurrently with their B.A.: Chicano Studies, Liberal Studies, and Urban Learning. The curriculum for the four options has been approved as a Subject Waiver Program by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). This means that students who complete the program, will not need to take the CSET Multiple Subjects.

Single Subject Matter Preparation Program
Subject matter programs do not lead to a credential but completion of such programs may be used to meet the subject matter competency requirement for a single subject credential in California. Cal State LA’s CTC approved subject matter waiver programs are below.

- Science: Geology (Geoscience) - Natural Science, B.S. offered by the Department of Geography, Geology, and Environment

- Elementary Subject - Urban Learning, B.A. offered by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction
2. Preliminary Education Specialist Teaching Credential
Education Specialist Preliminary Credential Program prepares teachers to serve students in urban classrooms using a variety of instructional models. The Education Specialist Instruction Credential authorizes the holder to conduct Educational Assessments related to student’s access to the academic core curriculum and progress towards meeting instructional academic goals, provide instruction, and Special Education Support to individuals in the area of specialization. The Education Specialist Preliminary Teacher Preparation Program includes content for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and teaching English learners.
There are four education specialist credential programs housed in the Department of Special Education and Counseling.
3. Added Authorization Programs
The Bilingual Authorization is designed to provide students who already have obtained their Multiple Subjects, Single Subjects, or Education Specialists Teaching Credentials an opportunity to add Bilingual Authorization approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). The program ensures that candidates have met these Bilingual Authorization standards which were adopted by the CTC. With the most current Bilingual Authorization Standards in California, the context, policies, and educational needs have expanded, particularly in preparing teachers to work with English Learners from diverse linguistic backgrounds in urban settings.
The BCLAD programs are housed in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

4. Education Specialist Added Authorization Program
- The Adapted Physical Education Added Authorization (APEAA) Program is based on a cohesive design intended to provide professional preparation for educators to provide instruction to students with disabilities in physical activity and lifelong wellness. The Adapted Physical Education Added Authorization is housed in the Rongxiang Xu College of Health and Human Services, School of Kinesiology .

6. Specialist Credentials and Certificates
- The Preliminary Administrative Services Credential program is an authentic, reflective, and collaborative learning experience constructed to provide prospective leaders with the theoretical foundation and practical application necessary to grow to be transformative school leaders. The Preliminary Administrative Services Credential is included in the MA degree in Educational Administration and is housed in the Department of Applied & Advanced Studies in Education.

7. Pupil Personnel Services
The Counseling, M.S. program in the Department of Special Education and Counseling .offers four options. Two of the options are Pupil Personnel Services related:.
- Pupil Personnel Services - School Counseling
- Pupil Personnel Services - School Psychology
- Added authorization in Child Welfare and Attendance (CWA)
The option in School- Based Family Counseling, is designed to train family systems oriented counselors who are eligible to apply for licensure in California as Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT) and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCC). The Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential in School Counseling and the Advanced Authorization in Child Welfare and Attendance (CWA) is included in the Master’s degree.
The option in School Psychology is designed for graduate students who plan to work as school psychologists who will focus on the psychoeducational development of individuals from birth to age 21, their abilities and potentialities, biological, emotional, behavioral, and cultural factors that influence the learning process. Candidates who earn the Master’s degree with this option also qualify for the Pupil Personnel Services credential with Advanced Specialization in School Psychology and Advanced Specialization in Child Welfare and Attendance Services.
8. Teacher Induction

The Cal State LA’s Teacher Education Induction program is designed to provide a two-year (four semester) individualized, job-embedded system of mentoring, support, and professional learning that begins in the teacher’s first year of teaching. Teacher Induction program is housed in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

9. Bachelor in Arts Degree in Urban Learning
Subject matter and preliminary credential are embedded in the Urban Learning, B.A. degree program.
