Overview
The Department of Mathematics offers Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree programs, as well a minor in Math and two Subject Matter Waivers in Mathematics.
Bachelor’s Degrees
A major in mathematics prepares students to teach in secondary schools, work as research assistants in industry and government, or enter graduate school to prepare for positions in higher education, industry, and government. There are four degree options:
- Option I - Applied Mathematics: This option prepares students for graduate work in applied mathematics or work in industry.
- Option II - General Mathematics: This option incorporates both pure and applied math courses to prepare students for graduate work in mathematics.
- Option III - Integrated Teaching This option satisfies both subject matter certification requirements and teacher education coursework requirements for a math credential. Students in Option III graduate with a degree in mathematics that is subject matter certified and a preliminary credential that allows them to teach single-subject mathematics.
- Option IV - Traditional Teaching: This option satisfies only subject matter certification requirements. Students in Option IV graduate with a degree in mathematics that is subject matter certified, but without the preliminary credential.
Master of Science Degree
A large fraction of students in this degree program become college mathematics teachers. Being a teaching associate in the department provides vital experience for that career path. Many students, including some whose undergraduate degree is not in mathematics, use the MS degree as a stepping stone into a PhD program in mathematics. The MS degree also prepares students for higher mathematical work in industry, business, and government.
