The Master of Arts degree in Education, Option in Secondary Teaching, provides educators with the opportunity to develop of their pedagogical skills and knowledge, build capacity for collaboration in educational contexts, access and value knowledge from multiple sources, all grounded in the pursuit of equity. This program has two objectives: the Master of Arts degree and a California Single Subject Teaching Credential. This option satisfies the requirements for both the Master’s of Education degree and for a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in an approved subject area. The Single Subject Credential is issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The secondary education programs include courses appropriate for pre-service teacher preparation in middle schools, junior high schools, and senior high schools. This option requires a minimum of 73-75 units (which includes 45-47 units towards the credential).

Admission to the Program

In addition to university requirements for admission to graduate study, applicants must have:

• A bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university,
• A 2.75 or higher grade point average in their last 60 semester (or 90 quarter) units attempted,
• Attempted the basic skills requirement (e.g., CBEST),
• Completed a CTC-approved subject matter program by subject-area department or received a passing score on all required sections of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET),
• GE Oral Communications (3) or Speech Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (1) or an acceptable alternative by petition, and
• Completed the Writing Proficiency Exam (0) or an acceptable alternative by petition or a score of 41 or higher on the writing portion of the CBEST.

Single Subject Credential (Secondary Teaching)

The teaching credential with authorization in Single Subject Instruction qualifies holders to teach in their authorized field at any grade level, preschool, kindergarten, and grades 1 through 12, or in classes organized primarily for adults. California State University Los Angeles is authorized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) to prepare students for Single Subject Teaching credentials in the following subject matters:

• Art
• English
• Industrial Arts and Technology Education
• Languages Other Than English
• Mathematics
• Music
• Physical Education
• Science (Biology, Chemistry, Foundational, Geo Science, or Physics)
• Social Science

Post-baccalaureate students who would like to earn a Single Subject Teaching credential in one of the above fields should read the information below and contact the Charter College of Education Office for Student Services in King Hall D2078 for advice.

Requirements for a Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential

In order for the university to recommend students to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for a preliminary Single Subject Teaching credential, the following requirements must be completed or passed:

• A Bachelor’s degree from regionally accredited college or university.
• Basic skills requirement, e.g., passing score on CBEST (all sections).
• A CTC-approved subject matter program by subject area department or a passing score on all required sections of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET).
• GE Oral Communication, OR  the writing proficiency examination (WPE), or acceptable alternative by petition
• U.S. Constitution requirement or equivalent
• The Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA)
• PH 2010 Medical Emergencies Management (3) or a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card (infant, child, and adult)
• The professional education courses listed below with a grade of “B-” or better.
