Option I: Composition

A minimum of 30 semester units is required for each of the individual options, including at least 15 units in 5000-level music courses. A comprehensive examination (MUS 5960) is required at the conclusion of the program. A project in the form of a composition, conducting recital, solo recital, lecture recital, or chamber music recital (candidate must play a primary role) is required at the end of each program (MUS 5990).

Graduate students who receive individual studio lessons as part of their degree program are required to concurrently enroll in an approved ensemble for each unit of studio lesson enrollment. In order to receive individual studio lessons, a graduate student is expected to maintain full-time enrollment. Students enrolled in the Master of Music degree program must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better in their music courses.

Program Learning Outcomes:


Upon completion of the Master of Music, students will demonstrate the following:

  1. Mastery of musicianship skills, artistry, and technique appropriate to the specific degree program.
  2. The ability to make effective artistic and intellectual musical judgments at a professional level in the area of specialization.
  3. A thorough knowledge of repertoire and historical performance practices appropriate to the specific field of study.
  4. Critical thinking and effective written and verbal communication skills in the context of musical discourse.
  5. The ability to independently research musical issues and formulate artistic and/or scholarly conclusions.

MUS 5960 Comprehensive Examination (0)


Students may take the comprehensive examination no earlier than the semester in which all course work is completed. Students must make arrangements for the comprehensive examination at least one quarter in advance. Students are urged to consult the Department for information about additional procedures.

MUS 5990 Thesis or Project (3)


Students are encouraged to request a project director from their area early in their program of study to ensure that progress toward the final project is accomplished in a timely manner. Students should consult the Department for information on procedures and required deadlines.

Option I: Composition


A total of 33 units is required in this option. The project for this option is a composition at least 15 minutes in duration and a 30-minute recital.

Option III: Conducting (31-35 units)


Track I - Choral Conducting (35 units)
Track II - Instrumental Conducting (31 units)

There are two tracks in this option. Track 1is for choral conducting (35 units) Track 2 is for instrumental conducting (31 units). A common core of 16 units is required for both conducting tracks. The project for this option is a conducting recital.

Students must select one of the following tracks with advisor approval:


Track I: Choral Conducting (12 units)


Choral ensemble participation is required each semester of enrollment.

Track II: Instrumental Conducting (8 units)


Instrumental ensemble participation is required each quarter of enrollment.

Option IV: Performance


Track I - Vocal (35 units)
Track II - Keyboard (32 units)
Track III - Instrumental (30 units)

A total minimum of 30 units is required for this option. There are three tracks in this option. Track I is Vocal Performance. Track 2 is Keyboard Performance. Track 3 is Instrumental Performance. A common core of 17 units is required for all three tracks. The project for this option is a solo recital.

Students must select one of the following tracks with adviser approval:

A total of 33 units is required for this option. The project for this option is a recital or composition or arrangement or recording project.
