Education, M.A.: Option in Curriculum and Instruction


The Master of Arts degree: in Education with an Option in Curriculum and Instruction provides educators with the opportunities for the development of skills and knowledge to conduct inquiry, to design curriculum and instructional programs, to implement programs, and to assess the success of those programs in the K - 12 school levels. Students may choose one of three emphases for specialization.

Admission to the Program

In addition to University requirements for admission to graduate study, applicants must possess a 2.75 grade point average in the last 60 semester units or 60 semester units attempted.

Overview for Course Study (30-34 Units)


All candidates for the M.A. degree will complete required core courses and one research course. Students will select an area of emphasis from one of three described below, early in their course of study.  All students will pass a comprehensive examination or complete a thesis or project. A minimum of 30 units is required for the M.A. degree. Although it is recommended that, all students have a teaching credential and classroom teaching experience, it is not required. A teaching credential may be pursued concurrently with this Master’s option.

Requirements for the degree also include completion of Area of Emphasis (18 units) and a Culminating Experience which may be either a Comprehensive Examination (0 units) or Thesis /Project (4 units)

Notes:

Students should expect to take the Comprehensive Examination (EDCI 5960 ) during the Fall or Spring semester after they complete all coursework on their program and must comply with college and division requirements.

*Students who do a thesis are required to obtain advisor approval.  

** May be repeated once for credit.
