Multiple Subject Teaching Credential

The Multiple Subject Teaching credential authorizes its holders to teach in a self-contained classroom such as the classrooms in most elementary schools. However, a teacher authorized for multiple subject instruction may be assigned to teach in any self-contained classroom (preschool, K-12, or in classes organized primarily for adults). In addition, the holder of a Multiple Subject Teaching credential may serve in a core or team teaching setting.

Students can earn a Multiple Subject Teaching credential as undergraduate students or as post-baccalaureate (graduate) students.

Undergraduate students earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in the following fields may choose to earn a Multiple Subject Teaching credential concurrently with their B.A.:

  • Child and Family Studies
  • Liberal Studies
  • Chicano Studies
  • Urban Learning

Those who would like to do so should read the information below and seek advice about the Blended option in their degree program from advisers in their program and from the Charter College of Education office for student services in King Hall D2078.

Post-baccalaureate students who would like to earn a Multiple Subject Teaching credential should read the information below and contact the Charter College of Education office for student services in King Hall D2078 for advice.

Requirements for Formal Admission to the Credential Program


For undergraduate applicants to be admitted to the credential program, they must have:

  • A 2.67 Grade Point Average (GPA) or better in all baccalaureate course work.
  • Completed the following with a grade of C or better, or with credit:
    • COMM 150 Oral Communication (4)
      or
    • COMM 151 Speech Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (1)
    • EDCI 300 The Teaching Profession: Preparing the Urban Educator (2)
    • EDFN 413 Psychological Foundations of Education (4) or its equivalent
    • EDSP 400 Foundations of Special Education (4)
    • UNIV 400 The Writing Proficiency Examination (0) or UNIV 401
      or an acceptable alternative by petition.
    • Attempted the basic skills requirement (e.g., CBEST).

For post-baccalaureate applicants to be admitted to the credential program, they must have:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Attempted the basic skills requirement, (e.g., CBEST).
  • A 2.75 Grade Point Average (GPA) or better in the last 90 quarter or 60 semester units.
  • Passed all sections of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET): multiple subjects.
  • Completed the following with a grade of C or better, or with credit:
    • COMM 150 Oral Communication (4)
      or
      COMM 151 Speech Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (1)
    • EDCI 300 The Teaching Profession: Preparing the Urban Educator (2)
    • EDFN 413 Psychological Foundations of Education (4) or its equivalent
    • EDSP 400 Foundations of Special Education (4)
    • UNIV 400 The Writing Proficiency Examination (0) or UNIV 401
      or A score of 41 or higher on the writing portion of the CBEST
      or an accetable alternative by petition.

Requirements for a Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential


In order for the university to recommend students to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for a preliminary multiple subject teaching credential, the following requirements must be completed or passed.

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Basic skills requirements, e.g., CBEST.
  • All sections of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET): Multiple Subjects. (undergraduate students must meet this requirement before block four.)
  • PH 201 Medical Emergencies Management (3)
    or
    A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card (infant, child, and adult).
  • PH 457 Health Education for Elementary School Teachers (1)
    (All students must meet this requirement before Block Four.)
  • UNIV 400 Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE) or
    UNIV 401 or acceptable alternative by petition.
     
  • POLS 150 Government and American Society (4) or equivalent.
  • THE Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA).
    (It is recommended that this examination be attempted immediately after completing EDEL 403 Directed teaching or EDEL 489 Demonstration of Instructional Competence.)
  • ALL THE Teaching Performance Assessments (TPA)
  • The professional education courses listed below.

Professional Education Courses (44 units)


 

University Multiple Subject Internship Credential Program


The University Multiple Subject internship credential program is designed for individuals who are employed as full-time teachers by cooperating school districts, have fulfilled all district and university prerequisites, and have been recommended by the district. The internship credential is issued for a two-year period during which time candidates must complete all requirements for the preliminary credential.

Prequirements for acceptance into the Multiple Subject Internship Program


For applicants to be admitted to the internship program, they must have:

  • Verification of a full-time job offer from a cooperating school district.
  • POLS 150 Government and American Society (4)
    or an equivalent.
  • Met the requirements for formal admission into the credential program as a post-baccalaureate student:
    • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university.
    • A 2.75 Grade Point Average (GPA) or better in the last 90 quarter or 60 semester units.
    • Passed the basic skills requirements, e.g., CBEST.
    • Passed all sections of the California Subject Matter Examination for Teachers (CSET).
    • Completed the following with a grade of C or better, or with credit:
      • COMM 150 Oral Communication (4)
        or
      • COMM 151 Speech Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (1)
      • EDCI 300 The Teaching Profession: Preparing the Urban Educator (2)
      • EDFN 413 Psychological Foundations of Education (4) or its equivalent
      • EDSP 400 Foundations of Special Education (4).
      • UNIV 400 Writing Proficiency Examination (0) or UNIV 401
        or
        A score of 41 or higher on the writing portion of the CBEST
        or
        An acceptable alternative by petition.

Individuals who seek admission to this program must meet with a university internship credential adviser for verification of requirements and completion of a program plan. Please contact the Division of Curriculum and Instruction in King Hall C2097 to ask how to contact a university internship credential adviser.

Requirements for A Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential through the Internship Program


 In order for the university to recommend interns to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for a preliminary multiple subject teaching credential, the following additional requirements must be completed or passed:

  • PH 201 Medical Emergencies Management (3)
    or
    A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card (infant, child, and adult).
  • PH 457 Health Education for Elementary School teachers (1)
    (This requirement needs to be met before Block Four.)
  • All the Teaching Performance Assessments (TPA)
  • The Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA).
    (It is recommended that interns take this examination after they complete EDEL 415 Proseminar: Curriculum and Teaching of Reading/Langauge Arts.)
  • The professional education courses listed below.
