Notice to Students Regarding Professional Licensure and Certification

The Doctor of Audiology (AuD) program is designed to prepare students to meet the academic and clinical requirements for California state licensure in Audiology as well as for certification by the American Board of Audiology (ABA Certified). The program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE) of the American Academy of Audiology. The degree is designed to be completed in four years (including summers and with a common entry point in the fall semester). A minimum of 120 units is required for the AuD degree.

Admission Requirements and Academic Prerequisites

A baccalaureate degree is a prerequisite to enter the AuD program. It is expected that students will have obtained a broad general education to serve as a background prior to their graduate study. Undergraduate coursework in mathematics and in basic and applied sciences is strongly encouraged. If the baccalaureate degree is not in the area of communication sciences and disorders, courses in the following content areas, or their equivalents as determined by the AuD Program Director, are required for admission to the graduate program:

COMD 4000 (Hearing Science) or equivalent
COMD 4020 (Audiology and Audiometry) or equivalent
COMD 4200 (Rehabilitative Audiology) or equivalent
COMD 4630 (Neuroscience of Communication) or equivalent

AND
a course in Statistics

And at least one course from among the following:

COMD 4220 (Advanced Audiology) or equivalent
COMD 4560 (Language Development) or equivalent
COMD 4610 (Descriptive Phonetics) or equivalent
COMD 4620 (Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech Mechanism) or equivalent.

NOTE: Prerequisite course work must have been completed within the past 10 years.

Degree Requirements

Students will complete a minimum of 66 units of academic coursework and a minimum of 45 units of clinical experience. Students will complete a minimum of 1820 hours of supervised clinical experience.

In terms 2, 3, and 4 in Years 1 and 2, students complete AUD 6510, 6520, and 6530 (Clinical Practicum in Audiology I, II, and III, respectively) on campus. Students then complete their first series of off-campus clinical experiences in terms 5, 6, 7, and 8 in Years 2 and 3 in AUD 6610, 6620, 6630, and 6640 (Clinical Externship in Audiology, I, II, III, and IV, respectively). Additionally, each student will complete one enrollment in AUD 6580 (Clinical Practicum in Vestibular and Balance) on campus in one term in either term 6, 7, or 8 in Year 3.

In the fourth and final year of the AuD Program, the student completes a year-long (three term sequence) of full-time clinical experience in AUD 6710, 6720, and 6730 (Clinical Residency I, II, III, respectively).

Additional Requirements

Successful completion of the doctoral preliminary examination after the completion of Year 1 of doctoral study.
Successful completion of the doctoral qualifying examination after the completion of Year 2 of doctoral study.
Successful completion of the PRAXIS examination in Audiology by the end of Year 4 of doctoral study.
Doctoral Investigative Project completed via enrollment in AUD 6910. 6920, and 6930. The project is begun in Year 3 and culminates in the Summer term of Year 4.
Acceptance and adherence to Program Technical Standards.
