Biomedical engineering is a burgeoning field and has been a major driving force in the U.S.’s job market over recent decades. This interdisciplinary field brings together electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, computer scientists, biologists, medical physicians, business entrepreneurs, and many other professionals to create the modern medical technology and advances that our society has witnessed to dramatically improve healthcare.  At the foundation of biomedical engineering is a deep understanding of engineering electrical, mechanical, and computing systems and the integration of knowledge in biology and medicine.

The Biomedical Engineering (BME) minor program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing biomedical engineering in their careers to obtain a strong foundation in their major disciplines including Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science, and understand how to apply their engineering or computing skills to contribute to the advancement of medical technology and treatments. Units taken in the above-said majors can be double-counted to satisfy the BME minor requirements.

Successful completion requires a 2.0 overall grade point average in the BME minor, good academic standing, and completion of all minor courses by the time students earn their baccalaureate.

Students who are declaring the Biomedical Engineering Minor must consult with a faculty advisor in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering , Mechanical Engineering , or Computer Science  before enrolling in the minor.  While 16 units are required to fulfill the minor, students may have additional units to complete as pre-requisites to the upper division electives.
