Overview
The minor in Japanese is available for students majoring in other fields or those with an interest in East Asia in general. It may be of particular interest to students studying history, international relations, sociology, other languages and literatures, business, or technology, as well as to those seeking employment with the government or international agencies.
Program Requirements
- Elementary Japanese (JAPN 1001 , JAPN 1011 , JAPN 1002 , and JAPN 1012 ), or an equivalent level of proficiency, are prerequisites to the minor.
- A total of 15-17 units are required from Lower Division Required Courses (6-8 units) and Upper Division Electives (9 units).

Lower Division Required Courses (6 or 8 units)
Complete one set of courses below. Select Set B, only if students do not need to take JAPN 2001 , JAPN 2011 , JAPN 2002 , and JAPN 2012 , having language proficiency high enough to take JAPN 3001 with permission from the Japanese Program Coordinator. Upper Division Electives (9 units)
Select 3-9 units from Group A and 0-6 units from Group B for a total of 9 units. Group A: Electives taught in Japanese (3-9 units)
Select 3-9 units from the following. Group B: Electives taught in English (0-6 units)
Select 0-6 units from the following.
