Program Overview

The M.S. Degree in Accounting prepares students for a wide range of employment opportunities in public accounting, industry and finance, government and nonprofit organizations. The program is designed to help acquire knowledge and skills in one or more accounting areas:

Accounting Information Systems,
Financial and Public Accounting, and
Taxation.

Graduates of the program are prepared to take a professional examination for entry into their selected area; are committed to professional and career development beyond their formal education; are equipped to become leaders who exhibit high standards of ethical conduct; and are prepared for doctoral study programs or research positions.

Admission to the Program

Applicants must complete 12 units of foundation business courses: CIS 1200 , ECON 2090 , FIN 2050 , and BUS 3050 .
Applicants must complete 15 units of foundation accounting courses: ACCT 2100 and ACCT 2110 or equivalent courses; ACCT 3200A , ACCT 3200B , ACCT 3210 , and ACCT 3220 .
Students must earn a minimum of a C grade in their Accounting Foundation courses. An approved Graduate Degree Program must be on file in the CBE Student Service Center. A minimum GPA of 3.00 is required for admission to the M.S. Degree in Accounting.

Once students have completed the business and accounting foundation courses, they achieve Graduate Standing.

A total of 33 units of 5000-level courses are required. Selections must be approved by the department.

ACCT 5995 - Case Studies and Research in Accounting [3]
Note - * Students who have taken ACCT 4240A and/or ACCT 4240B , or equivalent, before admission to the Accounting, M.S. Program, are exempted from taking ACCT 5240A and/or ACCT 5240B . However, to meet the 33-unit degree requirement, these students must select courses from their option electives list, with Advisor approval, to substitute the exempted course(s).

Options (15 units)

Select one option to complete the degree requirements.

A. Accounting Information Systems Option (15 units)

Select and complete 15 units from the directive elective list below. Students who have taken ACCT 4350 and/or ACCT 4360 before admission to this Accounting, M.S. program are not allowed to take ACCT 5350 and/or ACCT 5360 .

B. Financial and Public Accounting (15 units)

Select and complete 15 units from the directive elective list below. Students who have taken ACCT 4200 , ACCT 4270 , ACCT 4350 , or ACCT 4360 before admission to this Accounting, M.S. program are not allowed to take ACCT 5720 , ACCT 5290 , ACCT 5350 , or ACCT 5360 .

C. Taxation (15 units)

Select and complete 15 units from the directive elective list below. Students who have taken ACCT 4210A , ACCT 4210C , or ACCT 5210D prior to admission to this Accounting, M.S. program are not allowed to take ACCT 5210A and ACCT 5210C or ACCT 5210D .
