Minor in French


Overview

A minor in French is available for students majoring in other disciplines. It may be of particular value to students majoring in English, Spanish, or other languages and literature; History, Political Science, African American Studies, Sociology, or International Business. 

Enrollment Requirement

Completion of FREN 1001  and FREN 1002 , or an equivalent level of proficiency are required prior to join this program. Proficiency may be demonstrated by high school preparation or by a departmental examination.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate successfully with native speakers of the target language in a limited range of contexts (personal, familiar topics) on at least the ACTFL Intermediate level.
  • Describe some aspects of French and Francophone cultures.  Analyze differences between these cultures and student’s own.  Identify some well-known historical figures and events, and understand and be able to explain basic cultural characteristics of some countries in which French is spoken.
  • Understand spoken and visual messages, live or in recordings or videos, and summarize and discuss such messages or respond to them in an interactive context, on at least the ACTFL Intermediate level.
  • Be able to read and discuss short literary and other texts (advertisements, films, news articles, etc.), demonstrating the ability to discuss the ideas in these texts and their own interpretation of them.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with library and information technology as part of a well-rounded education in the Humanities, and exploit such technology to find resources in French.
