Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts degree in English select one of two options.

The General option is intended for those pursuing a liberal arts education with special emphasis on literature and writing; students can focus their General option programs by taking electives in one of several defined tracks or individually tailor their programs in consultation with a college adviser. Students interested in teaching middle or high school English should complete the Single Subject Credential (SSC) option and meet minimum GPA requirements to be eligible for certification of subject area competency.

Students majoring in English should obtain advisement prior to or during their initial semester of major coursework. Those majoring in English are urged to acquire command of at least one language other than English.

The total number of units required for the Bachelor of Arts degree in English is 120 units, of which 49-56 units are in the major. Consult with an adviser for the specific number of units required in all areas of the degree, including GE and free electives.

In consultation with your faculty mentor, select three courses from the following list. Notes to selected courses:

  1. Selected courses may not be double-counted for the Directed Electives for Core, 
  2. SeIected courses may not include more than two total courses from the following: up to two 2000-level ENGL courses and one ENGL 3800 series upper-division GE course.
Engaged English Requirement (3-4 units)

The Engaged English Requirement ensures that every English major will have the opportunity to connect their English major studies to their communities and/or to their professional development.

II. Single Subject Credential Teaching Option (20-22 units)


Refer to the Charter College of Education for regulations governing all teaching credential programs. Students seeking certification of subject area competency in English for the Single Subject Credential must take the following:
