Music, B.A.


Program Requirements:

  • The total number of semester units required for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music is 120 units, of which 45-47 units are in the major. Consult with the appropriate undergraduate adviser for the specific number of units required in each segment of the degree including GE and free electives.
  • A Senior Recital (MUS 4410 ) or Senior Project (MUS 4870 ) is required. Students electing to complete MUS 4870 must register for at least 2 units over a minimum of two semesters including the semester during which the final project is submitted.
  • Students must receive a grade of C or better for core courses in the degree program to satisfy music degree requirements for graduation.
  • Students must be enrolled in 4000-level applied music during the semester the Senior Recital is performed.
  • All students are required to pass a piano proficiency examination, MUS 2033 , or complete MUS 2032  (Class Piano Instruction IV), before being approved for graduation.

Program Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Arts in Music, students will demonstrate the following:

  1. An understanding of the role of music in society through performance and/or critical analysis.
  2. An understanding of procedures for realizing and communicating a variety of musical styles and structures in their historical and cultural contexts.
  3. The ability to form and defend value judgments about music.
  4. Proficiency in realizing the basic elements of musicianship, including rhythm, melody, harmony, structure, timbre, and texture.
  5. A level of intellectual and musical independence that results in the completion of a capstone project.

Students electing to complete MUS 4870 must repeat the course in two semesters including the semester during which the final project is submitted. Units earned in MUS 4870 may be double-counted to satisfy elective course requirements.
