Minor in Music

Enrollment

A minor in music is available for students majoring in other fields. A minimum of 18 units is required.

Program Learning Outcomes

An understanding of the role of music in society through performance and/or critical analysis.
An understanding of procedures for realizing and communicating a variety of musical styles and structures in their historical and cultural contexts.
Proficiency in realizing the basic elements of musicianship, including rhythm, melody, harmony, structure, timbre, and texture.

Requirements for the Minor (21-22 units)

Students must be enrolled in or have completed MUS 1011 and MUS 1012 in order to enroll in applied lessons.

Required Course (10 units)

MUS 1011 - Theory and Musicianship I (3)
MUS 1012 - Theory and Musicianship II (3)
MUS 1021 - Musicianship Lab I (1)
MUS 1022 - Musicianship Lab II (1)
MUS 1031 - Class Piano Instruction I (1) *
MUS 1032 - Class Piano Instruction II (1) *
* Note: These courses can be replaced with 2 units of electives if piano is the primary instrument. Advisor approval required.

Complete 2 units in one of the following areas of specialization:
