The Master of Science degree in Kinesiology prepares students to (a) progress in a professional career in exercise and fitness, rehabilitation and therapeutic exercise, physical education teaching, community leadership; or the sports industry; and (b) embark on further graduate study in a doctoral program in Kinesiology or a related discipline.

The program offers four options. Student must select one:

Admission to the Program

Graduate degree applicants must meet the University requirements for admission which include a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. To be admitted into the Master of Science degree program in Kinesiology, applicants must also meet the following:

A. Grade point average of at least 2.75 in the last 60 semester units (90 quarter units) attempted
B. Appropriate undergraduate preparation for the desired specialization within the discipline of Kinesiology
C. Two letters of recommendation
D. Statement of goals for graduate study
E. Submission of GRE general test scores

Requirements for the Degree (30 units)

A total of 30 units are required for graduation. This includes the common core (16 units), an option (12 units), and a culminating experience (2 units). At least 16 units must be at the 5000-level, and at least 16 units must be in Kinesiology. No more than 9 units of KIN 5980, Graduate Directed Study, may be included. To develop the 30 unit course of study, each student consults with an assigned graduate adviser who must approve the courses selected. Approval of the student’s graduate adviser is a specific prerequisite for enrollment in KIN 5990, Thesis or Project, and students must enroll in a total of 2 units to complete this course..

Option I: Exercise Science (12 units)

This Option prepares students for advanced professional positions in fitness and rehabilitation exercise facilities, and for doctoral study.

Required Courses (9 units):

Elective (3 units)

Select one of the following:

Option II: Pedagogy and Physical Activity (12 units)

This Option prepares students for advanced professional positions teaching physical education in schools and leading physical activities in community-based organizations, and for doctoral study.

Required Courses (9 units):

Electives (3 units)

KIN 5990 - Thesis (1-4) can be counted as an elective.

Supplementary Authorization

Holders of a Single Subject or Multiple Subject credential issued by the State of California may add a supplemental authorization to teach in another discipline by completing additional course work.

Adapted Physical Education Added Authorization (APEAA)

Option III: Movement Science (12 units)

This Option prepares students for advancing into allied health doctoral study or professional schools (e.g. physical therapy and occupational therapy). By design, this Option enables a tailored course of study that aligns to the industry-driven, required context-specific preparation.

Select 12 units from the following.

Option IV: Sport Opertations/Athlete Representation (12 units)

This Option prepares students for advanced professional positions within the sports industry, and for doctoral study.These courses will be offered at the DTLA campus through the College of Professional and Global Education.
