How does the PLO fit with the Institutional Mission / Institutional Learning Outcomes
This minor, originally focusing on the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean, now offers students a chance to comparatively study, through several participating departments, the history, art, philosophy, and literature of a broader range of ancient “Classical” and medieval civilizations and cultures. Ancient or medieval language study is not a requirement, but can be arranged through participating institutions. Mastery of content and processes of inquiry are emphasized through the comparative study of pre-modern civilizations. Intellectual skills are emphasized through the requirement of essay-writing assignments in various academic disciplines. CSULA’s global mission is addressed through the enhanced global (rather than more narrowly Mediterranean) scope of the newly revised Minor. Its urban mission is addressed though the comparative study of differing urbanisms, from Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro through medieval Chinese cities. The integrative learning of CSULA is emphasized through the transformative capacities of the eternal questions asked of pre-modern civilizations.
