Fit with the Institutional Mission / Institutional Learning Outcomes

The Certificate in 3D Digital Character Setup accords the mission of the university and its ILOs in several ways. The Certificate will expand and deepen their interdisciplinary and general understanding of the world, enhance their critical skills, and take responsibility as individuals within society. The follow ILOs below are mapped to the goals of the certificate program as such:

1. Knowledge: Mastery of content and processes of inquiry

Graduates with this certificate will build a strong knowledge base in fundamental and intermediate use of tools and practices to construct three dimensional digital characters that are capable of complex movement and animation. The animation industry and the gaming industry are two enormous fields that will be involved in this, as well as early adopting rapid changes by artificial intelligence. Industry standard tools and techniques will be mastered that is offered no where else in the institution, and the process of developing these skills by completing rigged characters that will allow their advanced abilities to tell stories through completed constructions that further engage them in the pursuit of knowledge and ability. Contemporary issues of narrative, and giving enough voice to characters is only possible is students have the training and performance to construct working digital puppet that can animate. Student learn this skill no where else in our curriculum, and the voices cannot be launched without this mastery of character design animator, skeleton, and control which this certificate offers. Furthermore, the focus on 3D character setup further develops the 3-dimensional needs for connecting to the CG industry, other competencies, that are not being served in their communities, or curriculum otherwise. Students will be prepared to put their character building knowledge directly into action, to tell those stories, after completing their certificate.

2. Proficiency: Intellectual skills

Graduates from this certificate will not only build and design characters that can employ into stories, documentaries, fictional or non-fictional presentations and communications, they also will be designing messages with these characters will convey. Students will be tasked to be responsible for the intellectual and developmental meaning of their character designs just as much as they will be responsible for the mastery of their technical operation. Into each syllabus for all courses contained in the certificate, students must research the connotations, influences, and field critiques about the choices of their designs that involve the use and constant testing of their intellectual proficiency. Students must not only create these characters, but write about the critical and support analysis from peers and instructor to locate the nature of the students references, choices, and revisions before conclusion are made. Students must think critically about their designs, research and read about other multi-cultures, approaches, and demonstrate a propose how these characters will be used.

3. Place and Community: Urban and global mission

The certificate proposed will attracted students from all around the location of the university as well as a wider demographic of students that will be attracted to this program. All graduates from this certificate will be required to possess, canalize and demonstrate the qualities of understanding themselves as individuals, and also recognize and regard those that belong to neighboring and different communities. Each student will be encompassed with the verbal, performance and creative tasks of supporting their design ideas for characters by looking at real people and lives around them. This practice is required for every project, and is the overall goal of creating controllable characters. The identity and representation of those character (functional or not) exist within the context of real cultures and traditional and new identities. It will be required for student to include all of these aspects, and expose to frequent critique as part of their character creation process. Understanding the multi-ethnic community of Los Angeles is built into this experience as they propose outlets for their built characters, which can include new stories or games within the community.

4. Transformation: Integrative learning

Students within this certificate will be integrating their own life experience and/or the experiences of lives of those in communities within the urban and industrial realities of Los Angeles with all the planning, construction, and finalization of all the 3D setup characters. These characters that they create cannot exist in a vacuum, and must be thoroughly analyzed and studied how they will integrate with the fabric of a society, and for what effect. By also proposing on how these characters will be used in community, to represent people, groups, avatar, and what the use will be, will be important to the assignments. Students will be required to research and propose how to ingrate their characters in the real world, and take responsibility for their ethical representation, within this current era of 2024. Students will be trained to understand that the characters they create will embody things that have cultural and effective meaning, and must orchestrate a supportive use for this.
