Fit with the Institutional Mission / Institutional Learning Outcomes
The LGBTQ Studies Minor would expand Cal State LA’s committment to fostering education that’s inclusive, that welcomes the diversity of thought and practice, and that prepares students for employment in various industries, including: health industries; education; social services, nonprofit; entertainment and culture (inc. museums); and business and marketing
- 1. Knowledge: Master of Content and Process of Inquiry. Students will have a deep understanding of the issues that impact the lives of LGBTQ+ people; an umbrella term that includes Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Gender Non-Conforming, Inter-Sex, Asexual, and Two-Spirit people. Through interdisciplinary and social justice approaches, students will engage with historical and contemporary issues related to LGBTQ+ people and communities. They will develop research, writing, and transferrable learning skills aimed at creating more livable worlds for LGBTQ+ people and communities; and, humanity, broadly imagined.
- 2. Proficiency: Intellectual Skills. Students will use and engage with theories and methodologies of Intesectionality, Transgender Studies, Queer Studies and Queer of Color Critique, and Critical Race Theory to develop sound intellectual histories of LGBTQ Critical Thought. They will apply LGBTQ+ critical perspectives to various disciplines and interdisciplines to challenge tensions that limit queer inquiry while engaging in research inquiry to inform, contribute to, and expand disciplinary and transdisciplinary knowledge making that centers on LGBTQ+ identities.
- 3. Place and Community: Urban and Global Mission. Through Intersectional Feminist theories, Transgender theories, Critical Race Theories, and Queer of Color Critique theories, research, and cultural practices, students will be able to ground LGBTQ+ knowledge formation within and across divergent and intersecting lived, everyday, and local experiences. Such grounded methodologies will allow students to draw upon cultural heritages rooted in the US and abroad, and thus permit engagement with localized (i.e. urban, rural, city, regional, etc ) and global (ie. international) understandings of the issues related to LGBTQ identity, life, and culture.
- 4. Transformation: Integrative Learning. Through research and writing, students will apply knowledges of LGBTQ+ theories to engage in evidence-based practices designed to create equitable, socially just, and thriving social worlds for LGBTQ+ people and communities, specifically, and humanity broadly speaking. Students will also engage in reflective writing activities designed to assess, enhance, and enrich their interpersonal understanding of LGBTQ+ life and thus develop an appreciation of the value of living within a multicultural, pluralistic, society that includes LGBTQ+ people and communities.
