Fit with the Institutional Mission / Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO)

The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Ethnic Studies Pedagogies aligns with university Strategic Plan areas: (a) Engagement, Service, and the Public Good and (b) Academic Distinction.

Engagegement, Service, and the Public Good: The certificate is a partnership between the College of Ethnic Studies and the Charter College of Education, in conjunction with local school districts in the greater Los Angeles area. The certificate serves primarily public K-12 school teachers and community educators, who teach and serve students in urban Los Angeles. Given the fieldwork/applied nature of the certificate, knowledge gained in the four required courses is directly applicable to service in local schools.

Academic Distinction: The certificate provides high quality preparation for Ethnic Studies K-12 teachers and community educators by using inclusive pedagogies and engaged university teaching. Based on the latest research in the fields of culturally responsive teaching and Ethnic Studies, the core courses represent innovative and cutting-edge curricular design.

The Ethnic Studies Pedagogies Certificate extends the University Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge: Mastery of Content and Process of Inquiry; 4. Transformation: Integrative Learning.

University Learning Outcome 1. Knowledge: Mastery of Content and Process of Inquiry: The certificate strengthens students’ undergraduate knowledge base through the four core courses required of the certificate. The areas expanded upon include literature, history, and intersectionality; as well as pedagogies.

University Learning Outcome 4. Transformation: Integrative Learning. The core required courses develop students’ intellectual and personal selves. Participants gain not just knowledge of content areas (literature, history, etc.) from an Ethnic Studies frame, but they come to understand ways that knowledge of self and society are interconnected, and are generatively applied in teaching contexts of K-12 school settings.

 Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

Participants who complete the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Ethnic Studies Pedagogies will:

  • Deepen their knowledge base of Ethnic Studies content in the areas of literature, history, and intersectionality;
  • Develop a critical understanding of anti-racist, decolonial, and rehumanizing pedagogies;
  • Design K-12 curricular units using culturally responsive, sustaining, and re-rooting teaching frameworks;
