C1. Fit with the Institutional Mission / Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO)

Knowledge: Mastery of content and processes of inquiry

CSULA graduates have a strong knowledge base in their academic major and can use powerful processes of inquiry in a range of disciplines. They engage contemporary and enduring questions with an understanding of the complexities of human cultures and the physical and natural world and are ready to put their knowledge into action to address contemporary issues.

Graduates of TVF’s Master of Arts graduates are proficient in Media Research and Critical Analysis. TVF MA Graduates are prepared to successfully pursue and perform capably at the doctoral level.

TVF MA Graduates are prepared with a focused knowledge designed to perform successfully in leadership roles in the Los Angeles, California, and International Media Industries.

2. Proficiency: Intellectual skills

CSULA graduates are equipped to actively participate in a democratic society. They are critical thinkers who make use of quantitative and qualitative reasoning. They have the ability to find, use, evaluate and process information in order to engage in complex decision-making. They read critically, speak and write clearly and thoughtfully and communicate effectively.

TVF MA students are prepared in Quantitative and Qualitative Media Research and Analytic Analysis both in dedicated courses in research and across the course of study.

3. Place and Community: Urban and global mission

CSULA graduates are engaged individuals who have contributed to the multi-lingual and multiethnic communities that constitute Los Angeles and the world of the future. They are aware of how their actions impact society and the environment, and they strive to make socially responsible decisions. They are community builders sensitive to the needs of diverse individuals and groups and committed to renewing the communities in which they live.

The TVF MA attracts students from across the United States and Internationally. The program is being updated with a renewed focus on preparation for our graduates to work and continue studies both in Los Angeles (a major media center) and across the country and the world. The MA has historically attracted both a large cohort of women as well as students from a diversity of backgrounds who have successfully integrated into both industry and further education.

4. Transformation: Integrative learning

CSULA graduates integrate academic learning with life. They engage in the community, professional, creative, research, and scholarly projects that lead to changes in their sense of self and understanding of their worlds. Graduates integrate their knowledge, skills, and experience to address complex and contemporary issues and act ethically as leaders for the 21st century.

TVF MA students report not only successful entry into doctoral education and leadership roles in the media industries but also successful work in various organizations dedicated to integrating women and under-represented groups into the media industries. Our graduates are also actively engaged in providing opportunities for under-represented peoples to have access to advanced media education.

 

C2. Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

1.  Students will demonstrate creative writing skills in the production of projects, screenplays and/or scholarly essays (Skills).
2.  Students will gain competence as potential researchers and scholars in the field, whether in doctoral study or other research-based positions (Skills).
3.  Students will demonstrate advanced abilities to employ critical theories and insights in analysis of contemporary media productions, practices and impacts (Skills).
4.  Students will know the industrial, historical and aesthetic components of television and film production (Knowledge).
5.  Students will have a greater appreciation for the social responsibilities of contemporary media, including responsibilities engaging notions of identity, ethics, politics and culture (Attitudes).
