The Minor in Creative Studies in Music addresses the following areas of the university mission through academic success. Below are the main parts of the university mission that are impacted by this program. 

Promote inclusive pedagogical approaches that address the distinct values, beliefs, and cultures of our students

  • This program builds on the traditional, Euro-based canon by offering alternative approaches to performance and composition through required courses in  improvisation and applied world music styles.

Build academic programs that transcend disciplinary boundaries

  • As stated in the justification, this minor program offers the opportunity for working between the sub-discplines of composition, improvisation, technology and world music. This synthesis transends the boundaries of the traditional music canon.

Support diverse learning approaches, pioneering and innovative curricula, and faculty-student research opportunities.

  • The proposed program offers opportunites for the studnets and instructors to engage in diverse learning approaches, by adding improvisation and world music applications to the curriculum. The addition of courses in applied world music styles, outsude the realm of survey courses, and the exploration of real time technology in perfoamcne and improvisation (Music Technology Sandbox) offers multitude approaches and experiences to the curriculum overall and to the minor pprogram specifically.

 

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Minor in Creative Studies in Music, the student will have the ability to:

  • Improvise in a variety of styles;
  • Use music technology in performance and composition outside of the standard commercial applications;
  • Show proficiency through perfomance and composition in at least one non-Western, world music style (Arabic music, West African music, etc.).
