C1. Fit with the Institutional Mission / Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO)

The BA in Music at Cal State LA is designed to cultivate the unique talents, diverse life experiences, and intellect of our students through transformative musicianship, performance, and scholarship. Through coursework, ensemble study, public performance, and scholarship, students have ample opportunity to demonstrate the following departmental values that align with the University’s mission and vision:

Musical Excellence - Emphasizing the development of excellent musicianship through a diverse approach to the study of harmony, musicianship, and musicology.  

Community - Building a community of music within the Department, across the University, and in the greater Los Angeles area.

Diversity - Celebrating artistic and cultural diversity, including backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

Technology - Emphasizing technology as a crucial component in the evolving musical landscape.

Public Engagement - Bringing music into the public sphere, especially by engaging with and building our musical communities.

Social Justice - Giving students opportunities to enact social change through music in order to become engaged members of the global community.

 

C2. Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

1. An understanding of the role of music in society through performance and/or critical analysis.
2. An understanding of procedures for realizing and communicating a variety of musical styles and structures in their historical and cultural contexts.
3. The ability to form and defend value judgments about music.
4. Proficiency in realizing the basic elements of musicianship, including rhythm, melody, harmony, structure, timbre, and texture.
5. A level of intellectual and musical independence that results in the completion of a capstone project.
