Fit with the Institutional Mission or Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

Knowledge: Mastery of content and processes of inquiry
Students graduating with a BA in Chinese will have acquired both functional communicative skills in Chinese and a deep understanding of Chinese people and societies. Through their studies in Chinese language, linguistics, literature, and culture, our graduates are able to analyze both the historic literature and culture and the contemporary societies of mainland China, Taiwan, and diasporic Chinese communities. They are also able to communicate with these communities in a wide variety of academic, business, and personal contexts with the requisite attention to cultural nuance. In addition, our graduates have demonstrated competence in modern language research methods and critical analysis of literary works and cultural trends. They are able to apply these intellectual and linguistic skills to a wide range of disciplines, and to use their cross-cultural understanding of the complexities of human cultures to fully engage in issues facing our society.

Proficiency: Intellectual skills
Our Chinese B.A. graduates are equipped to actively participate in democratic society. They are critical thinkers who make use of quantitative and qualitative reasoning. They have the ability to find, use, evaluate and process information in order to engage in complex decision-making. They read critically, speak and write clearly and thoughtfully, and communicate effectively. Our Chinese B.A. graduates are able to perform these skills in two languages, and their cross-cultural knowledge adds to their intellectual depth and breadth.

Place and Community: Urban and global mission
Through their commitment to study in depth a language other than English and a culture other than the majority ones present in Los Angeles and the United States, our Chinese B.A. graduates demonstrate their awareness of and intimate connection to the multi-lingual and multiethnic communities that constitute Los Angeles and the world of the future. Their linguistic and cultural competence links them more closely to local as well as global communities. They are engaged with the world and seek to improve it through their knowledge of linguistic and cultural diversity, and are prepared to take their places as global citizens of the twenty-first century.

Transformation: Integrative learning
CSULA graduates integrate academic learning with life. They engage in community, professional, creative, research and scholarly projects that lead to changes in their sense of self and understanding of their worlds. Graduates integrate their knowledge, skills and experience to address complex and contemporary issues and act ethically as leaders for the 21st century.
