C2 - Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

  1. Compose or construct an original body of work through disciplined inquiry and discourse analyzing issues in a particular area of the visual arts. 
  2. Develop research-based knowledge, skills, and dispositions associated with equity, diversity, inclusion, and access (EDIA) as these apply to effective practice in art and design contexts.
  3. Model best practices for professional writing, engagement with arts organizations, and the teaching of art and design.
  4. Identify, define, and explain practical and conceptual knowledge within students’ specific fields of study.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to discern quality, critically analyze, and understand the work of artists and designers of the past and present in relation to a contemporary, global context.
  6. Assess and critique their own and others’ research, creation, and scholarly projects in a contemporary, ethical, and in-depth manner that leads to a development in students’ sense of self.

  1. Students in all programs demonstrate mastery of practical and conceptual knowledge of the visual arts (appropriate to the degree program).
  2. Students in all programs demonstrate abilities to: carry out scholarly and disciplined inquiries in the visual arts; and participate actively in discourse analyzing critical issues in the field.      
  3. Students in all programs demonstrate an ability to engage with Los Angeles as a major cultural and international center of visual arts and related industries.
  4. Students are qualified for admission into programs of advanced study and/or entrance into professional careers.
  5. Students in all programs demonstrate understanding of diverse cultural traditions and aesthetic values embodied in the visual arts, past and present.    
  6. Students in all programs demonstrate abilities to develop collegial relationships and work collaboratively with faculty and students. 
  7. Students in all programs demonstrate understanding of their roles and responsibilities to participate actively and ethically in multicultural societies.  
  8. Students in all programs demonstrate abilities to: negotiate complex visual landscapes; derive meaning from the visual arts; and pursue creative endeavors throughout their lives.
  9. In addition to the above, graduates demonstrate the ability to produce and present an original body of work through disciplined inquiry and discourse analyzing issues in a particular area of the visual arts.

Articulate how advancing knowledge or practice in their field of study contributes to the public good. (ART 5500, ART 5070) 7. Frame and examine a controversy or problem through research, projects, papers, exhibits, or performances in the field of study. (ART 5990/5995, ART 5070) 8. Situate the field of study and its relevance within a broader context, including - but not limited to - social, intellectual, and/or applied professional contexts. (ART 5500, ART 5011/5012/5013) 9. Apply appropriate ethical standards or practices within the field of study. (ART 5070, ART 5310)


Institutional Learning Goals, Objectives, Outcomes and Measures

California State University, Los Angeles students expand and deepen their interdisciplinary and general understanding of the world, enhance their critical skills, and take responsibility for a lifetime of learning, and as graduates become individuals who engage, enhance, and contribute to democratic society.

1. Knowledge: Mastery of content and processes of inquiry

CSULA graduates have a strong knowledge base in their academic major and can use powerful processes of inquiry in a range of disciplines. They engage contemporary and enduring questions with an understanding of the complexities of human cultures and the physical and natural world and are ready to put their knowledge into action to address contemporary issues.

2. Proficiency: Intellectual skills

CSULA graduates are equipped to actively participate in democratic society. They are critical thinkers who make use of quantitative and qualitative reasoning. They have the ability to find, use, evaluate and process information in order to engage in complex decision-making. They read critically, speak and write clearly and thoughtfully and communicate effectively.

3. Place and Community: Urban and global mission

CSULA graduates are engaged individuals who have contributed to the multi-lingual and multiethnic communities that constitute Los Angeles and the world of the future. They are aware of how their actions impact society and the environment, and they strive to make socially responsible decisions. They are community builders sensitive to the needs of diverse individuals and groups and committed to renewing the communities in which they live.

4. Transformation: Integrative learning

CSULA graduates integrate academic learning with life. They engage in community, professional, creative, research and scholarly projects that lead to changes in their sense of self and understanding of their worlds. Graduates integrate their knowledge, skills and experience to address complex and contemporary issues and act ethically as leaders for the 21st century.
