C1. Fit with the Institutional Mission / Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO)
The proposed Ed.S. degree program will accomplish the Cal State LA mission, which states: “Cal State LA transforms lives and fosters thriving communities across greater Los Angeles. We cultivate and amplify our students’ unique talents, diverse life experiences, and intellect through engaged teaching, learning, scholarship, research, and public service that support their overall success, well-being, and the greater good.” The Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO) and the Graduate Learning Outcomes (GLO). The four ILOs (knowledge, proficiency, place and community, and transformation) and nine GLOs (mastery of concepts, information literacy, diversity, research, communicative fluency, public good, problem solving, context, ethics) also align with this new degree program.
The proposed Ed.S. degree program has a specific goal of training the next generation of school psychologists who will support the academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and overall success and wellbeing of youth in the Los Angeles community. The program provides candidates with the essential tools of success in the field of school psychology and education through content knowledge (e.g., mastery of concepts, research, diversity) and application skills (e.g., information literacy, communicative literacy). Many of the candidates in our current Master’s program come from our surrounding communities and have an expressed interest and goal of returning to work in their communities upon graduation. Our current and proposed program supports the upward mobility of our students and graduates; starting salaries for school psychologist in the Los Angeles area are currently $80,000-100,000.
