Program Learning Outcomes

1.     Knowledge base. Students will acquire knowledge and demonstrate understanding of core principles across the subjects of biology/microbiology, chemistry, physiology/anatomy, as well as demonstrate subject-specific understanding in fields that of public health, nutritional science, kinesiology, nursing and health care management.
2.     Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking.  Students will learn critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to make decisions informed by evidence and aimed at developing solutions that address health-related issues in the community and globally. This includes:
2.1  Locating, evaluating, and using needed information, and doing so ethically and legally
2.2  Applying scientific inquiry and quantitative reasoning to answer scientific questions
2.3  Locating, evaluating and organizing appropriate data in table and graphical form
2.4  Designing and conducting investigative experiments
2.5  Demonstrating the ability to work collaboratively
3.     Communication. Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate, orally and in writing, scientific information to people from multi-lingual and multi-ethnic communities in a variety of situations, and will do so effectively and compassionately.
4.     Civic Engagement. Students will be able to recognize and evaluate the social, economic and environmental health determinates in a particular community or globally, and develop scientific, equitable solutions for a range of issues. Students also understand that they have a social responsibility to apply fact-based science to situations relevant to everyday life.
5.     Professional development. Students will explore careers in health science and develop a plan for life after graduation. This includes learning job-search skills and interview strategies, networking with local stakeholders, developing leadership skills, displaying appropriate professional behaviors and engaging in ethical decision-making as confident, socially aware professional leaders in their community.

The BS in Applied Science will continue to be aligned with the Institution Mission as set forth in the current structure under the umbrella of the Natural Science Program. The PLOs were crafted to align with the ILOs; Knowledge, Proficiency, Urban and Global Mission and Integrative Learning. Students will not only gain the knowledge and critial thinking skills, they will be prepared for a career in health science and ready to proform as professionals and leaders in the community.
