C1. How will the changes fit with the Institutional Mission / Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO) - 2024 Cycle
One of the main changes in this proposal is the restructuring of the applied math option in the BS Math program. This option is mainly chosen by students who plan to work in industry after graduation. In this proposal, we replace some of the previously required courses with those that give more emphasis on the computational aspect of mathematics. These courses will give students better preparation/training in using mathematics and critical thinking to tackle real-life problems. The other change we proposed is to increase the free elective by 1 unit. This change is due to the reduction in PHYS 2100 units from 5 to 4 units. By increasing the free elective by 1 unit, students will be able to explore fields outside of mathematics to broaden their knowledge.
C2. Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) - 2024 Cycle
Students who graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics will be able to:
1. Understand core mathematical concepts including the ability to construct rigorous mathematical proofs. (mathematical knowledge and proofs)
2. Solve mathematical problems using mathematical reasoning and problem-solving techniques. (critical thinking and problem-solving skills)
3. Apply mathematical principles to a wide range of real-world problems and situations. (mathematical applications)
4. Use technology to gain significant insight into mathematical problems and data. (computational skills)
5. Communicate mathematical ideas in both written and oral forms. (communication skills)
6. Be aware of opportunities for mathematics majors, including career options as well as graduate study. (career awareness)
