Fit with the Institutional Mission or Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

The Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) program supports all four of the Institutional Learning Outcomes.

1. Knowledge: Mastery of content and processes of inquiry

MSE graduate students shall have a strong base of knowledge in the fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering and how to apply this knowledge to address contemporary materials-related issues facing our world.

2. Proficiency: Intellectual skills

The MSE graduate program is rooted in quantitative as well as qualitative reasoning.  Students use both skills to tackle contemporary Materials Science and Engineering problems.

3. Place and Community: Urban and global mission

The MSE graduate program has an interdisciplinary nature specifically aimed at training scientists and engineers  to apply their knowledge to the development of materials and technologies to address the challenges facing our diverse communities.

4. Transformation: Integrative learning

The MSE curriculum includes extensive discussion on advanced materials, which includes research and technology development for novel materials and how they affect human lives and solve contemporary issues.

The Cal State LA MS MSE Learning Outcomes map to the ILOs as shown below.

  • Ability to acquire and apply new knowledge [IGLO 2,7,8]
  • Ability to perform in-depth analysis, experimentation, and design to solve contemporary materials science and engineering problems [IGLO 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8]
  • Ability to communicate effectively, and work independently and in collaboration with others in an ethical and professional manner [IGLO 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9]
