Fit with the Institutional Mission or Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs)

The biomedical engineering minor program supports all four of the Institutional Learning Outcomes.

1. Knowledge: Mastery of content and processes of inquiry

BME minor students shall have a strong base of knowledge in their academic major in addition to the fundamentals of biomedical engineering and how to apply this knowledge to address contemporary medical/biomedical issues facing our world.

2. Proficiency: Intellectual skills

The BME minor program is rooted in quantitative as well as qualitative reasoning.  Students use both skills in assessing the medical technology needs of a diverse population.

3. Place and Community: Urban and global mission

The biomedical engineering minor program is specifically aimed at training engineers and computer scientists to apply their knowledge to the development of medical technology to address the challenges facing our diverse communities.

4. Transformation: Integrative learning

The biomedical engineering curriculum includes extensive discussion on contemporary biomedical issues, which includes ethical issues in medical treatments, research and technology development.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

Upon completion of the minor in biomedical engineering, students will demonstrate the ability to:

  • apply knowledge of mathematics, engineering, computer science and the life sciences by completing a biomedical engineering design project;
  • conduct literature research on a current biomedical engineering topic and its application/impact on society; and
  • clearly communicate biomedical engineering technical information in both written and verbal formats.
