C1. Fit with the Institutional Mission / Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO)

Cal State LA aims to transform lives and foster thriving communities across greater Los Angeles. This minor will help interested students gain knowledge, skills and competencies that can be used to launch successful careers in construction and engineering management. This will positively impact the prospects of our students, since there has been an increasing demand for construction and engineering management professionals, especially in the Los Angeles area, offering attractive opportunities. Also, this will positively impact communities across greater Los Angeles, since construction and engineering management professionals play a vital role in developing the built environment that encompasses the structures we live in, the roads we drive on, the buildings in which we work, and the complex engineering systems we rely on. Through engaged teaching and learning, the courses of the minor aim to cultivate and amplify our students’ unique talents, diverse life experiences, and intellect to ultimately support their overall success, well-being, and the greater good.

• Understand different principles of project management in the context of construction and engineering applications
• Understand the roles of different project stakeholders
• Identify different project delivery systems, contract types and team selection strategies
• Recognize different project phases, knowledge areas, and processes
• Apply project planning and scheduling techniques
• Apply quantity take-off techniques, cost estimates, pricing methods, and labor productivity rates. 
• Apply cash flow analysis at the project level 
• Prepare and present planning and estimating documents
• Demonstrate the ability to allocate and level resources efficiently
• Use software programs that are commonly used by the industry professionals
