Fit with the Institutional Mission or Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs) - 2024 Cycle

1. Demonstrate mastery of major theories, concepts, approaches to inquiry and/or practices.

  • In order to pass the core courses in the program, students need to demonstrate that they meet this ILO through each core class’s signature assignments (i.e., final papers and course assignments) which require the demonstration of their understanding and mastery of major theories in the field of TESOL (see PLOs in section C2).
  • In order to succeed in the program, students need to demonstrate mastery of major theories, concepts, and approaches in the field on TESOL on either the Comprehensive Exam or on their Thesis/Final Project.

2. Demonstrate information literacy.

  • Information literacy, or the ability to find, evaluate, organize, use, and communicate information in all its various formats, most notably in situations requiring decision making, problem solving, or the acquisition of knowledge, is part of the program learning outcomes and required for good performance in all core classes.
  • To demonstrate this ability, students are asked to respond to readings through various in-person activities and online assignments, ranging from papers to discussions and real-life application tasks. Their responses and reflections allow them to demonstrate their information literacy.

3. Identify and evaluate diverse perspectives, assumptions, and conventions.

  • Students are asked to read current articles and discuss them in either in-class or online discussions, during which they evaluate others’ (from either published pieces or from their classmates) diverse perspectives and assumptions in comparison to their own.
  • Examples of other academic conventions needed to succeed in this program: writing in academic English, and using APA formatting and style.

4. Critically examine quantitative and/or qualitative evidence in the evaluation, construction, and communication of arguments.

  • The peer-reviewed academic papers they read for all classes in the program contain either quantitative or qualitative evidence that lead to an evaluation, construction, and/or communication of arguments related to the field of TESOL/ language education.

5. Demonstrate communicative fluency.

6. Articulate how advancing knowledge or practice in their field of study contributes to the public good.

7. Frame and examine a controversy or problem through research, projects, papers, exhibits, or performances.

8. Situate the field of study and its relevance within a broader context, including - but not limited to - social, intellectual, and/or applied professional contexts.

9. Apply appropriate ethical standards or practices.
