  1. establish a foundation for understanding and interpreting the historical world that produced the African diaspora to provide the groundwork for interpreting and analyzing the contemporary world that continues to be shaped by the politics, popular cultures, and social movements of Black populations
  2. foster a socially responsive and applied Pan Africanism that is in partnership with the people, communities, and environments that are engaged, served and studied to further the development of African peoples worldwide
  3. provide a theoretical base of knowledge, exposure to methods of research, and a context for analyzing and interpreting the African diasporic experience, which can be invaluable either in further graduate study or in a specific job or career choice

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the M.A. in Pan African Studies, students will be able to:

1) demonstrate an interdisciplinary understanding of the history, culture, and politics of Africans of the diaspora
2) create research or applied approaches to addressing and demystifying issues facing domestic African communities or worldwide 

3) be prepared for doctoral studies or professional careers in relevant areas

  • All course-based student learning outcomes will be assessed via written examination, oral examination, or term paper(s).  Overall student learning outcomes, program outcomes, and institutional outcomes will be assessed via successful completion of all PAS MA coursework and fulfillment of the PAS 5990 Thesis Research or PAS 5995 Project:
    • An issue related to the agency, experiences, and advancement of people of African descent.
    • Their approach to better understand or modify this issue on an educational or institutional level
