Post-Master’s Certificate in Nurse Practitioner: Family Psychiatric/Mental Health

Family Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate for Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialists (Minimum 12 units)


The School of Nursing offers a special post-master’s Family Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate. This program is for nurses who have a Master’s degree in Nursing as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatric Nursing and are practicing in that role but wish to transition to a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner by taking courses in the Nurse Practitioner:  Family Psychiatric/Mental Health Option within the Master of Science degree in nursing. Applicants must submit all transcripts and undergo a gap analysis. After the gap analysis the student will be required to take the common core course and all courses in the Family Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner option that were not taken in the previous master’s program or have not been part of the applicant’s recent current practice. Unless the transcript shows theory and clinical for both adult and child/adolescent populations the student will be required to take NURS 5421 Psychiatric Nursing Diagnosis and Treatment across the Lifespan (4) and at least four units of NURS 5430 with the population not previously cared for.

Prerequisites


State or National Certification as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist Current practice in psychiatric nursing.
