**Notice to Students RE: Professional Licensure and Certification  

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Learning is an Integrated Elementary Subject Matter Preparation Program designed to prepare teachers who are grounded in contemporary urban pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching for diverse urban elementary (K-6) or special education (K-12 or birth-22) classrooms. The major combines an interdisciplinary approach to urban learning as a social phenomenon with elementary subject matter courses and teacher preparation leading to

a) the Multiple Subject teaching credential (elementary education);

b) the Education Specialist (special education) teaching credential in one of four disciplines; or

c) dual credentials in elementary and special education (mild/moderate disabilities). 

Students who satisfy the major and teacher preparation requirements for their chosen option must complete a minimum of 120-135 units to graduate.

Students in the Urban Learning major will satisfy General Education requirements as part of the 84-unit elementary subject matter waiver program.  Prospective students preparing to transfer from a community college should seek advisement from a counselor or their campus transfer center, and complete a program of General Education coursework, which satisfies the requirements for the elementary subject matter waiver program and CSU-GE or IGETC certification. Students pursuing a teaching credential in Options 1, 2, and 3 should review all requirements posted on the Charter College of Education, Office for Student Services website.

       

General Education Requirements:


Total 48 units of which 9 are in the major, denoted with double asterisks **. 

Courses designated with an asterisk * are required for completion of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing approved 84-unit Elementary Subject Matter (ESM) Waiver Program. Completion of the ESM Waiver meets the subject matter requirement and Subject Matter Examination is then not required for fieldwork or for the credential. Students having passed the Subject Matter Examination may make appropriate course substitutions for ESM classes with advisor approval.

Elementary Subject Matter (ESM) Waiver Program: 

ESM Waiver meets the subject matter requirement and Subject Matter Examination is then not required for fieldwork or for the credential. 

Credential Program Admission Requirements


Students transferring to Cal State LA who plan to major in Urban Learning are strongly encouraged to meet the Basic Skills Requirement (e.g., pass all sections of CBEST) before transferring.  Students should see a major adviser regarding completion of the degree and other credential requirements.

I. Conditional Admission (to Options 1, 2, or 3)

Requirements for undergraduate preliminary (conditional) admission to credential programs include the following:

  • Junior standing (minimum 60 completed semester units)
  • Completion of CCOE application materials including any fees
  • Grade point average of 2.67 or higher in all undergraduate coursework attempted
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended
  • A negative TB test current within the last 12 months
  • Two strong and supportive letters of recommendation
  • A well written and meaningful Philosophy of Education Statement
  • Background clearance from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing
  • Attempt Basic Skills Requirement (e.g., all sections of the CBEST examination or equivalent)

II. For Admission without Conditions (to Options 1, 2, or 3)

Students will need the previous requirements met plus the following:

  • An overall 3.0 GPA must be maintained in all professional education courses with a minimum grade of “C” in each course for the major, elementary subject matter and credential components;
  • A signed academic program plan; plus
  • Completion of the option prerequisite courses:

Option 1 - Integrated Multiple Subject Credential (ESM, Degree and Credential Completion Option)

Prerequisite courses: EDCI 4000 and EDCI 4011 and EDSP 4000 and ULRN 2120 and (COMM 1100 or COMM 1510 or an acceptable alternative by petition)

Option 2 - Integrated Education Specialist (Special Education) Credential (ESM, Degree and Intern Credential Completion Option)

Prerequisite courses:EDCI 4000 and  EDSP 4000 and (COMM 1100 or COMM 1510 or an acceptable alternative by petition)

Option 3 - Accelerated Dual (Multiple Subject and Education Specialist) Credential (ESM, Degree and Intern Credential Completion Option)

Prerequisite courses: EDCI 4000 and EDSP 4000 and (COMM 1100 or COMM 1510 or an acceptable alternative by petition)

Requirements for the Major (59 units)


Option 2 - Integrated Education Specialist Intern Credential (27-31 units)


This is the ESM, degree and intern credential completion option in special education.

Option 3 - Accelerated Dual Credential (33 units)


 This is the ESM, Degree and Credential Completion Option.

A unique feature of this option is the possibility for candidates in the teaching credential options to complete three additional CTC-approved Bilingual Authorization courses. These courses prepare candidates to develop, implement, and adapt curriculum and instructional strategies for bilingual, dual language, and cross-cultural settings. The candidate will also be required take the CSET exam for the targeted language. Upon successful completion of these additional requirements, the candidate will be ready to apply for the Bilingual Authorization.
