Option I: Composition

Option VI: Music Education

A minimum of  19 semester units is required in the MM core, with 14-15 additional units required for each individual option. At least 15 units must be 5000-level music courses. A project in the form of a composition, conducting recital, solo recital, lecture recital, or chamber music recital (candidate must play a primary role) is required at the end of each program (MUS 5990 or MUS 5995).

Graduate students who receive individual studio lessons as part of their degree program are required to concurrently enroll in an area-approved ensemble for each term of studio lesson enrollmentStudents enrolled in the Master of Music degree program must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better in their music courses.

Program Learning Outcomes:


Upon completion of the Master of Music, students will demonstrate the following:

  1. Mastery of musicianship skills, artistry, and technique appropriate to the specific degree program.
  2. The ability to make effective artistic and intellectual musical judgments at a professional level in the area of specialization.
  3. A thorough knowledge of repertoire and historical performance practices appropriate to the specific field of study.
  4. Critical thinking and effective written and verbal communication skills in the context of musical discourse.
  5. The ability to independently research musical issues and formulate artistic and/or scholarly conclusions.

MUS 5990 Thesis or MUS 5995 Project (3 units)


Students are encouraged to request a project director from their area early in their program of study to ensure that progress toward the final project is accomplished in a timely manner. Students should consult the Department for information on procedures and required deadlines.

Applied Music


Select one from the following (4 units):

Option I - Composition (16 units)


The project for this option is a composition at least 15 minutes in duration and a 30-minute recital.

Option II: Commercial Music (16 Units)


Option III: Conducting (15 units)


Track I - Choral Conducting
Track II - Instrumental Conducting

There are two tracks in this option. Track 1 is for choral conducting, Track 2 is for instrumental conducting. A common core of  7 units is required for both conducting tracks. The project for this option is a conducting recital.

Students must select one of the following tracks with advisor approval:


Track I: Choral Conducting (8 units)


Choral ensemble participation is required each term of enrollment.

Track II: Instrumental Conducting (8 units)


Instrumental ensemble participation is required each term of enrollment.

Electives (3 units)


Select 4000-or 5000-level courses in music with advisor approval.

Option IV: Performance (16 units)


Option V: Afro Latin Music (16 units)


The project for this option is a recital or composition or arrangement or recording project.

Option VI: Music Education (14 units)


History and Literature Requirement (3 units)


Select any 4000- or 5000-level music history course with advisor approval.

Electives ( 6 units)


Any 4000- or 5000-level courses may be selected with the advisor’s approval.
