Notice to Students RE: Professional Licensure and Certification
The multiple subject teaching credential authorizes its holders to teach in a self-contained classroom such as the classrooms in most elementary schools. However, a teacher authorized for multiple subject instruction may be assigned to teach in any self-contained classroom (preschool, K-12, or in classes organized primarily for adults). In addition, the holder of a multiple subject teaching credential may serve in a core or team teaching setting.
Students can earn a multiple subject teaching credential as undergraduate students or as post-baccalaureate (graduate) students.
Undergraduate students earning a bachelor of arts degree in the following fields may choose to earn a multiple subject teaching credential concurrently with their B.A.:
• Chicano Studies
• Child and Family Studies
• Liberal Studies
• Urban Learning
Those who would like to do so should read the information below and seek advice about the blended option in their degree program from advisors in their program and from the Charter College of Education Office for Student Services.
Post-baccalaureate students who would like to earn a multiple subject teaching credential should read the information below and contact the Charter College of Education Office for Student Services for advice.
Each integrated program candidate must meet certain requirements prior to being conditionally admitted to the teacher credential program. In addition to those listed below, the candidates must also demonstrate personality and character traits that satisfy the standards of teaching by the teacher education faculty of the campus, as evidenced in the candidate’s Philosophy of Education statement and letters of recommendation.

Requirements for Conditional Admission to the Preliminary Credential Program
- A 2.67 grade point average (GPA) or better in all baccalaureate course work for undergraduate applicants or a
2.75 grade point average (GPA) or better in the last 60 semester or 90 quarter units for post-baccalaureate
applicants. Note: Undergraduate students are those students whose degrees have not been conferred by the time
they commence EDCI 4000.
- CCOE Application for Admission
- Technology Proficiency Statement
- CCOE Admission Control Card
- Official transcripts from every junior college, college, or university attended, except CSULA. Note: Foreign
transcripts must be evaluated by an agency approved by the university.
- Philosophy of Education Statement
- Proof of Valid Certificate of Clearance
- Photocopy of negative TB Test
- Two original letters of recommendation
- Proof of completion or attempt of Basic Skills Requirement (BSR)
Effective January 5, 2015, all applicants for re-admission will be required to complete a re-admission protocol and interview for consideration. Please see Charter College of Education, Office for Student Services website for specific information.
Requirements for Admission Without Conditions to the Preliminary Credential Program
- A bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally-accredited college or university for post-baccalaureate applicants
- Proof of completion or attempt of Basic Skills Requirement (BSR)
- Passed all sections of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET): Multiple Subjects.
- Completed the following with a grade of C or better, or with credit:
- COMM 1100 Oral Communication (3) or COMM 1510 Speech Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (1) or an acceptable alternative by petition
- EDCI 4000 Transformative Teaching in Diverse Urban Classrooms (3)
- EDCI 4010 English Language Development (3)
- EDFN 4400 Schooling in a Diverse Urban Society (3) or its equivalent
- EDSP 4000 Foundations of Special Education (3)
- The Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE) or equivalent
Requirements for a Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential
In order for the university to recommend students to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for a Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, the following requirements must be completed or passed:
- A bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university or approved equivalent
- Basic Skills Requirement (BSR), e.g., CBEST (all sections)
- All sections of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET): Multiple subjects (undergraduate students must meet this requirement before Directed Teaching)
- a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card (infant, child, and adult)
- The Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE) or acceptable alternative by petition
- U.S. Constitution requirement or equivalent
- The Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA)
- All required Teaching Performance Assessments (TPA)
- Credit for the professional educational courses listed below with a GPA of 3.0 or better (all courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better)
- All courses for the Multiple Subject and Single Subject credential must be completed within seven years.

Multiple Subject University Intern Credential Program
The Multiple Subject University Intern Credential Program is designed for individuals who are employed as full-time teachers by cooperating school districts, have fulfilled all district and university prerequisites, and have been recommended by the university. The intern credential is issued for a two-year period during which time candidates must complete all requirements for the preliminary credential.
Requirements for acceptance into the Multiple Subject University Intern Credential Program
For applicants to be admitted to the intern credential program, they must have:
- Verification of a full-time teaching job offer from a cooperating school district.
- U.S. Constitution requirement or an equivalent.
- Met the requirements for admission without conditions into the multiple subject credential program as a post-baccalaureate student:
- A bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally-accredited college or university or approved equivalent.
- A 2.75 Grade Point Average (GPA) or better in the last 60 semester or 90 quarter units.
- Passed the Basic Skills Requirement (BSR), e.g., CBEST.
- Passed all sections of the California Subject Matter Examination for Teachers Multiple Subject (CSET).
- Completed the following with a grade of C or better, or with credit:
- COMM 1100 Oral Communication (3) course or COMM 1510 Speech Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (1)
- EDCI 4000 Transformative Teaching in Diverse Urban Classrooms (3)
- EDCI 4010 English Language Development (3)
- EDFN 4400 Schooling in a Diverse Urban Society (3) or its equivalent
- EDSP 4000 Foundations of Special Education (3).
- The Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE) or equivalent.
Individuals who seek admission to this program must meet with a University Intern Credential advisor for verification of requirements and completion of a program plan. Please contact the Division of Curriculum and Instruction to ask how to contact a University Intern Credential adviser.
Requirements for a Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential through the University Intern Credential Program
In order for the university to recommend interns to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for a preliminary multiple subject teaching credential, the following additional requirements must be completed or passed:
- A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card (infant, child, and adult).
- All required Teaching Performance Assessments (TPA)
- The Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA).
- The professional education courses listed below.

Added Authorizations
Holders of a valid basic general education teaching credential issued by the state of California may add an additional credential, either multiple subject or single subject, or add an additional single subject content area, by completing additional course work. Interested students should consult the Charter College of Education Office for Student Services for further information.
