Notice to Students RE: Professional Licensure and Certification
The Master of Arts degree in Education with an Option in Bilingual/Multicultural Education in the Urban Classroom offers candidates the opportunity to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the needs of children in urban schools particularly those children who are English language learners. It also offers candidates the opportunity to select courses that are specifically designed to combine theory and research with practical classroom application for use in bilingual, dual language, and cross cultural settings.

Admission to the Program
For admission to the program, applicants must:
- Meet the university requirements for admission to graduate study,
- Have a 2.75 or higher grade point average in their last 60 semester (or 90 quarter) units attempted,
- Have completed EDCI 4010 or equivalent,
- Have consulted with a faculty advisor.
Students are encouraged to complete a valid teaching credential issued by California or any state by the end of this program.
Requirements for the Degree (minimum of 30 units)
A minimum of 30 units is required, including at least 15 in 5000-level courses. Students must pass a comprehensive examination or complete a thesis or project. There is a limit on credit that may be earned in variable-unit courses. Bilingual/Multicultural Education in the Urban Classroom Option Requirement (18 Units)
Content Area and Research Focus (6-9 units)
Select 6-9 units from the following:
Bilingual Cross-Cultural Theory and Methods Focus (9-12 units)
Select 9-12 units from the following:
Electives (0-3 units)
You may select electives with advisor approval or from the following:
Comprehensive Examination or Thesis or Project (0, 4 units)
