Undergraduate Certificate in Applied Gerontology

The Rongxiang Xu College of Health and Human Services through the Applied Gerontology Institute offers a credit certificate program in Applied Gerontology designed to enhance the preparation of individuals interested in health and human service disciplines to increase their knowledge, skills, and effectiveness as practitioners with older populations, particularly the multiethnic and multiracial elderly. The program is designed for a wide range of students including those seeking a career change and those in the field seeking to enhance their promotional opportunities. A total of 21 units is required, including 12 units of core courses, 3 units of field experience, and 6 units of electives.

Admission to the program requires upper division standing (completion of 60 semester  units) and the consent of a faculty adviser in the student’s major department or school (or the coordinator of the certificate program for students whose major is undeclared).

Required Field Experience/Internship (3 units)


Placement is arranged for each discipline through the Applied Gerontology Institute. HHS 4950 is requirement of the certificate in the applied gerontology program and cannot be substituted by other field work taken in the student’s major department.
