Admission to the Program
Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field with overall GPA of 2.75 or better to be considered for admission. A promising applicant with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.74 may be admitted as a special action student. Special action students must achieve an overall GPA of 3.0 for four qualifying courses as approved in advance by the department. Students with non-ME BS degrees or from non-ABET accredited ME programs may be admitted with condition. Prerequisite courses will be required only for conditionally admitted students.
The Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at Cal State L.A. is structured to prepare students for advancement in employment as a mechanical engineer as well as for further study at the doctoral level.
Requirements for the Degree
A total of 31 units are required, with at least 22 units in 5000-level courses. A thesis or comprehensive examination is required. The advice and approval of a mechanical engineering graduate advisor must be obtained before enrolling in any course.
