The undergraduate program in French includes a major for the Bachelor of Arts degree and a choice of minors in French or in interdisciplinary Francophone Studies.
Requirements for the Degree
- The total number of units required for the Bachelor of Arts degree in French is 120 units, of which 45 units are in the major: Students complete a required Common Core of 3 lower division units and 27 upper-division units, as well as 15 units of additional electives in groups A-D.
- Consult with an advisor for the specific number of units required in all areas of the degree including GE and free electives; some courses may double-count in major, minors, and GE.
- Prior to beginning the Bachelor of Arts program in French, students must have completed FREN 2002 or demonstrate equivalent language competency.
FREN course numbers ending in 8 may be taught in English or French; check GET to verify the language of instruction.
FREN course numbers ending in 9 are taught in English and their inclusion in the major and minor may be limited; see requirements below.

Note: * FREN 3001 may be taken twice; this is recommended for most non-native speakers. The second iteration counts in the elective Group C.
Electives (15 units)
Students must complete 15 units from the following groups of electives A-D, including at least 3 units each from groups A and B. A maximum of 6 units may be completed in group D. Group A: Language Usage and Linguistics
Complete at least 3 units from the following: Group B: Advanced French and Francophone Literature Seminars
Complete at least 3 units from the following: Group C: Additional French Electives
Group D: Francophone World taught in English
Notes: No more than 6 units from this list can count towards major. When taught in English, FREN 4318 , FREN 4328 , and FREN 4338 above in Group C are included in the 6-unit limit in this group.
