Students of the Material Science and Engineering program (MSE) have an opportunity to enroll in a wide variety of courses depending on their background, interest, and future goals. The MSE program prepares graduate students for industrial positions in related fields and for Ph.D. programs at other universities. Through the program, the students learn the application of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering to solve materials science-related problems. The program emphasis is on the fundamentals of materials science to enable students to practice as engineers and scientists to build a better tomorrow through innovations in materials science and engineering.

Degree Requirements:
A total of 30 semester units required with at least 15 in 5000-level courses. All students are required to complete the 6 core courses, 16 units:
- Engineering of Materials ME 4141 (3) ,
- Chemistry and Physics of Materials CHEM /PHYS 4142 (3) ,
- Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Materials CHEM 5510 (3) ,
- Mechanical Behavior of Materials ME 5140 (3) ,
- Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Materials PHYS 5330 (3) and
- Materials Laboratory ME 4310 (1) .
Advisor approval is required for enrolling in any elective course. Either a thesis or a comprehensive examination is required as the culminating experience prior to graduation.
