Single Subject Teaching Credential

The teaching credential with authorization in Single Subject Instruction qualifies holders to teach in their authorized field at any grade level, preschool, kindergarten, and grades 1 through 12, or in classes organized primarily for adults. California State University Los Angeles is authorized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) to prepare students for Single Subject
Teaching credentials in the following subject matters:
• Art
• English
• Industrial and Technology Education
• World Languages - Languages Other Than English
• Mathematics
• Music
• Physical Education
• Science: Biological Sciences, Science: Chemistry, Science: Geosciences, Science: Physics, or Foundational-Level
General Science
• Social Science
Students can earn a Single Subject Teaching credential as undergraduate students or as post-baccalaureate (graduate) students.
Undergraduate students earning a bachelor’s degree in any of the above fields who would like to earn a Single Subject Teaching credential concurrently with their bachelor’s degree should read the information below and seek advice about the integrated option in their degree program from advisors in their program and from the Charter College of Education Office for Student Services. A list of Subject Matter advisors for each Single Subject Credential Subject Matter is available.
Post-baccalaureate students who would like to earn a Single Subject Teaching credential in one of the above fields should read the information below and contact the Charter College of Education Office for Student Services for advice.

Requirements for Conditional Admission to the Preliminary Credential Program
- A bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally-accredited college or university for post-baccalaureate applicants
- Proof of completion or attempt of Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) (e.g., attempt all sections of the CBEST)
- A 2.67 grade point average (GPA) or better in all baccalaureate course work for undergraduate applicants or a 2.75 grade point average (GPA) or better in the last 60 semester or 90 quarter units for post-baccalaureate applicants. Note: Undergraduate students are those students whose degrees have not been conferred by the time they commence EDCI 4000 .
- CCOE Application for Admission
- CCOE Credential Admission and Application Fee Payment
- Official transcripts from every junior college, college, or university attended, except CSLA. Note: Foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an agency approved by the university.
- Philosophy of Education Statement
- Proof of valid Certificate of Clearance
- Photocopy of negative TB Test
- Two original letters of recommendation
Requirements for Admission without Conditions to the Preliminary Credential Program
- A bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally-accredited college or university for post-baccalaureate applicants
- Proof of completion or attempt of Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) ) (e.g., attempt all sections of the CBEST)
- Completed a CTC-approved subject matter program by subject-area department or received a passing score on all required sections of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET).
- Completed the following with a grade of C or better, or with credit:
Effective January 5, 2015, all applicants for re-admission will be required to complete a re-admission protocol and interview for consideration. Please see Charter College of Education, Office for Student Services website for specific information.
Requirements for a Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential
In order for the university to recommend students to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for a preliminary Single Subject Teaching credential, the following requirements must be completed or passed:
- A bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Basic Skills Requirement (BSR), e.g., CBEST (all sections).
- Completed a CTC-approved subject matter program by subject-area department or a passing score on all
required sections of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET).
- A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card (infant, child, and adult)
- U.S. Constitution requirement or an equivalent.
- All required Teaching Performance Assessments (TPA)
- Credit for the professional education courses listed below with a GPA of 3.0 or better (all courses must be
completed with a grade of “C” or better).
- All courses for the Multiple Subject and Single Subject credential must be completed within seven years.

Single Subject University Intern Credential Program
The Single Subject University Intern Credential Program is designed for individuals who are employed as full-time teachers by cooperating school districts, have fulfilled all district and university prerequisites, and have been recommended by the university. The intern credential is issued for a two-year period during which time candidates must complete all requirements for the preliminary credential.
Requirements for Acceptance into the Single Subject University Intern Program
For applicants to be accepted into the University Intern Credential program, they must have:
- Verification of a full-time job offer from a cooperating school district.
- Fulfillment of the U.S. Constitution requirement or an equivalent.
- Met the requirements for admission without conditions into the single subject credential program as a post-baccalaureate student:
- A bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally-accredited college or university or approved equivalent.
- A 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) or better in the last 60 semester or 90 quarter units
- Passed the Basic Skills Requirements e.g. CBEST.
- Completed a CTC-approved subject matter program by subject-area department or received a passing score on all required sections of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET).
- Completed the following with a grade of “C” or better or with credit:
Individuals who seek admission to this program must meet with a University Intern Credential advisor for verification of requirements and completion of a program plan. Please contact the Division of Curriculum and Instruction to ask how to contact a University Intern Credential advisor.
Requirements for a Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential through the University Intern Credential Program
In order for the university to recommend interns to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for a preliminary single subject teaching credential, the following additional requirements must be completed or passed:
- A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card (infant, child, and adult)
- All required Teaching Performance Assessments (TPA)
- The professional education courses listed below:

Added Authorizations
Holders of a valid basic general education teaching credential issued by the state of California may add an additional credential, either multiple subject or single subject, or add an additional single subject content area, by completing additional course work. Interested students should consult the Charter College of Education Office for Student Services for further information.
