Mathematics, B.S.

The Bachelor of Science degree curriculum is designed to prepare students for positions in business, industry, or government, as well as for teaching mathematics in middle or high schools or graduate work in mathematics. (See Undergraduate Studies: General Information , especially the General Education section for information on requirements beyond those in the major.)

The total number of units required for the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics is 120-135 units, of which 81-105 units are in the major depending on the option selected.

The table below explains specific number of units required in all areas of the degree including GE and free electives in all four options.

Requirements for the Major (77-104 units)

B. Options Requirements

In addition to the major core requirements students must select one of the following options.

    I. Applied Mathematics Option
    II.  General Mathematics Option
    III.  Integrated Teaching Option
    IV. Traditional Teaching Option

I. Applied Mathematics Option (34-36 units)

This option prepares students for graduate work in applied mathematics or work in industry.

II. General Mathematics Option (34-36 units)

This option incorporates both pure and applied math courses to prepare students for graduate work in mathematics.

Teaching Options

In order to obtain a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics, students must complete 1) subject matter certification requirements and 2) teacher education coursework requirements.

             Option III (Integrated Teaching Option) satisfies BOTH subject matter certification requirements and teacher education coursework requirements, including student teaching.

              Option IV (Traditional Teaching Option) satisfies ONLY subject matter certification requirements. Consequently, students in Option III graduate with a degree in mathematics that is subject matter certified and a preliminary credential that allows them to teach single subject mathematics, whereas students in Option IV graduate with a degree in mathematics that is subject matter certified, but with no preliminary credential.


Students in the teaching options must earn a grade of C or higher in all courses in the major. The Writing Intensive (wi) requirement is satisfied within the major for both teaching options.

III. Integrated Teaching Option (61 units)

Option III satisfies BOTH subject matter certification requirements and required teacher education coursework including student teaching. The students in this option are required to submit their credential application package to the Charter College of Education during their enrollment in MATH 3950. MATH 3950 must be completed prior to taking any 4000 level courses. A minimum GPA of 2.75 in the last 60 units of coursework is required for admission in the credential program. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.00 in all professional education courses.

The UD GE requirement, the UD civic learning (cl) requirement and one diversity requirement (d) are all addressed within the option.

IV. Traditional Teaching Option (35-37 units)

Option IV satisfies the subject matter certification requirement for a single subject credential, but does not offer the preliminary credential. Students should consult the Charter College of Education for credential admission requirements at least two semesters prior to graduation.
