Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts degree in English select one of two options. The General option is intended for those pursuing a liberal arts education with special emphasis on literature and writing; students can focus their General option programs by taking electives in one of several defined tracks or individually tailor their programs in consultation with a faculty mentor. Students interested in teaching middle or high school English must complete the Single Subject Credential (SSC) option and meet minimum GPA requirements to be eligible for certification of subject area competency.

Students majoring in English must obtain advisement prior to or during their initial semester of major coursework. Those majoring in English are urged to acquire command of at least one language other than English.

The total number of units required for the Bachelor of Arts degree in English is 120 units, of which, 49-51 units are in the major. Consult with an adviser for the specific number of units required in all areas of the degree, including GE and free electives.

In addition to the Core Requirements for the major, select one of the following options:

General Option (15 units)


General Option Electives (12 units)


In consultation with your faculty mentor, select four General Option electives. Courses may not be double-counted in both the Directed Electives and General Option Electives category. In addition, General Option Electives may include no more than two total courses from the following: up to two 2000-level ENGL courses and one ENGL upper-division GE course (i.e. ENGL 38xx). 

General Option Senior-Level Culminating Course (3 units)


Students must pass one of the following with a grade of C or better in order to satisfy the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement.

Suggested General Option Program Tracks


Students can focus their undergraduate course of study by choosing some or all of their electives from one of several defined program tracks. Consult a departmental adviser for a current list of program tracks and associated courses.

Use of a program track is optional, though students seeking certification of subject area competency in English for the Single Subject Credential must complete all the requirements listed under the Single Subject Credential Teaching Option described below.
