The Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy is suited to the needs of  many groups of students including: those seeking a broad and integrated liberal education; those preparing for law school; those interested in careers in government, education, publishing, or theology; and those planning to do graduate work in philosophy with an aim of teaching at the college level.  In general, an education in philosophy helps students develop the analytic and communication skills and capacity for independent thinking necessary to succeed at almost any career. 

The total number of units required for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy is 120 units, of which 38-47 are in the major, depending on the option selected. Consult with an advisor for the specific number of units required in all areas of the degree including GE and free electives.

Requirements for the Major (38-47)


General Option (38 units)


A total of 38 semester units in philosophy is required for the major with the General option.

Pre-law Option (47 units)


A total of 47 semester units is required for the major with the Pre-law option, including 38 units in philosophy and 9 outside philosophy.

Additional Electives in Philosophy (9 units)


At least 6 units must be at the 4000 level. Select courses with advisor approval.

Additional Electives Outside Philosophy (9 units at the 4000 level)


Select courses with advisor approval that supplement prelaw background.
