Single Subject Teaching Credential

The Single Subject Teaching Credential authorizes its holders to teach in their authorized field at any grade level, preschool, kindergarten, and grades 1 through 12, or in classes organized primarily for adults.

California State University Los Angeles is authorized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) to prepare students for Single Subject Teaching credentials in the following subject matters:

  • Art
  • English
  • Industrial Arts and Technology Education
  • Languages Other Than English
  • Mathematics
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Science (Biology, Chemistry, Foundational, Geo Science, or Physics)
  • Social Science

Students can earn a Single Subject Teaching credential as undergraduate students or as post-baccalaureate (graduate) students.

Undergraduate students earning a bachelor of arts degree in any of the above fields who would like to earn a Single Subject Teaching credential concurrently with their B.A. Degree should read the information below and seek advice about the Blended option in their degree program from advisers in their program and from the Charter College of Education Office for Student Services in King Hall D2078. A list of Subject Matter advisers for each Single Subject Credential Subject Matter is available in King Hall D2078.

Post-Baccalaureate students who would like to earn a Single Subject Teaching credential in one of the above fields should read the information below and contact the Charter College of Education Office for Student Services in King Hall D2078 for advice.

Requirements for Formal Admission to the Credential Program


For undergraduate applicants to be admitted to the program, they must have:

  • A 2.67 Grade Point Average (GPA) or better in all baccalaureate course work.
  • Completed the following with a grade of C or better, or with credit:
    • COMM 150 Oral Communication (4)  or
      COMM 151 Speech Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (1)
    • EDCI 300 The Teaching Profession: Preparing the Urban Educator (2)
    • EDFN 413 Psychological Foundations of Education (4) or its equivalent
    • EDSP 400 Foundations of Special Education (4)
    • UNIV 400 Writing Proficiency Examination (0) or UNIV 401 or an acceptable alternative by petition.
    •  Attempted the basic skills requirement (e.g., CBEST).

For post-baccalaureate applicants to be admitted to the program, they must have:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university.
  • Attempted the basic skills requirement, (e.g., CBEST).
  • A 2.75 Grade Point Average (GPA) or better in the last 90 quarter or 60 semester units.\
  • Completed a CTC-approved subject matter program by subject-area department or received a passing score on all required sections of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET).
  • Completed the following with a grade of C or better, or with credit:
    • COMM 150 Oral Communication (4)
      or
      COMM 151 Speech Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (1)
    • EDCI 300 The Teaching Profession: Preparing the Urban Educator (2)
    • EDFN 413 Psychological Foundations of Education (4) or its equivalent
    • EDSP 400 Foundations of Special Education (4)
    • UNIV 400 Writing Proficiency Examination (0) OR UNIV 401
      or
      A score of 41 or higher on the writing portion of the CBEST. Or an acceptable alternative by petition.

Requirements for a Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential


In order for the university to recommend students to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for a preliminary Single Subject Teaching credential, the following requirements must be completed or passed.

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Basic skills requirements, e.g., CBEST.
  • Completed a CTC-approved subject matter program by subject-area department
      or a passing score on all required sections of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET).
    (Undergraduate students must complete this requirement before Block Four.)
  • PH 201 Medical Emergencies Management (3)
      or
    A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card (infant, child, and adult)
  • PH 456 Drugs and Health (4)
      or
    PH 457 Health Education for Elementary School Teachers (1)
    (All candidates must complete this requirement before Block Four.)
  • POLS 150 Government and American Society (4)
      or an equivalent.
  • All the Teaching Performance Assessments (TPA)
  • The professional education courses listed below.

Professional Education Courses (45-46 units)


University Single Subject Internship Credential Program


The University Single Subject Internship Credential Program is designed for individuals who are employed as full-time teachers by cooperating school districts, have fulfilled all district and university prerequisites, and have been recommended by the district. The internship credential is issued for a two-year period during which time; candidates must complete all requirements for the preliminary credential.

Requirements for Acceptance into the Single Subject Internship program

 For applicants to be accepted into the internship program, they must have:

  • Verification of a full-time job offer from a cooperating school district.
  • POLS 150 Government and American Society (4) or an equivalent.
  • Met the requirements for formal admission into the credential program as a post-baccalaureate student. i.e., have:
    • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university.
    • A 2.75 Grade Point Average (GPA) or better in the last 90 quarter or 60 semester units
    • Passed the basic skills requirement (e.g., CBEST).
    • Completed a CTC-approved subject matter program by subject-area department or received a passing score on all required sections of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers
      (CSET).
    • Completed the following with a grade of C or better or with credit:
    • COMM 150 Oral Communication (4)
      or
    • COMM 151 Speech Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (1)
    • EDCI 300 The Teaching Profession: Preparing the Urban Educator (2)
    • EDFN 413 Psychological Foundations of Education (4) or its equivalent
    • EDSP 400 Foundations of Special Education (4)
    • UNIV 400 Writing Proficiency Examination (0)
      or UNIV 401
      or
      A score of 41 or higher on the writing portion of the CBEST, or an acceptable alternative by petition.

Individuals who seek admission to this program must meet with a University Internship Credential adviser for verification of requirements and completion of a program plan. Please contact the Division of Curriculum and Instruction in King Hall C2097 to ask how to contact a University Internship Credential adviser.

Requirements for a Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential through the internship program

In order for the university to recommend interns to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for a preliminary single subject teaching credential, the following additional requirements must be completed or passed:

  •  PH 201 Medical Emergencies Management (3)
    or

    A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) card (infant, child, and adult)

  • PH 456 Drugs and Health (4)

    or

    PH 457 Health Education for Elementary School teachers (1)
    (this requirement needs to be met before Block Four.)
  • All the Teaching Performance Assessments (TPA)

  • The professional education courses listed below 

Professional Education courses (57-58 units)


Supplementary Authorizations


Holders of a Single Subject Teaching Credential issued by the state of California may add a supplemental authorization to teach in another discipline by completing additional course work. Interested students should consult the Charter College of Education Office for Student Services in King Hall D2078 for further information.
