Overview
The Department of Art offer students the opportunity to acquire a background of knowledge and skills, and to develop their abilities in the visual arts. The programs prepare students for advanced professional study in art as well as for many professions in teaching, business, and industry. Students with interests in animation; art education; art history; fashion, fiber and materials; design; and studio arts will find appropriate courses of study in the department. Students pursuing careers in other fields may benefit from combining the study of art with their professional preparation. The Minor in Art, The Minor in Art History, or the Certificate in Fashion, Fiber and Materials are available to these students. Classes are offered for both majors and non-majors. The Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degree programs are described below.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Department of Art is to serve the needs of an urban and diverse university community by providing courses in a liberal arts foundation and in undergraduate and graduate programs in art that are designed to prepare students for careers in various professional fields or for further study in visual art and as lifelong producers or consumers of art.

Exhibitions of Work
The Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery presents exhibitions of artwork by established professional artists as well as by faculty and students. Graduate student thesis exhibitions and undergraduate shows are presented each year. In addition, the student-run exhibition space, COMA Gallery, presents rotating exhibitions of Cal State LA student artwork. All exhibitions are free and open to the public.
