Overview
The Department of Communication Disorders is committed to providing opportunities for students to have an exciting and rewarding future - a future in an enriching career as a respected professional helping others. Academic programs are designed to teach clinical skills and abilities for diagnosing and treating many different types of speech, language, hearing, and balance impairments.
The Department of Communication Disorders offers
- a baccalaureate degree (designated as a preprofessional major),
- a master’s degree in the area of Speech-Language Pathology, and
- the Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degree.
Completion of the master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology meets the requirements for licensure from the Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology & Hearing Aid Dispensers Board, California Department of Consumer Affairs, and for the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Completion of the Doctor of Audiology degree program meets the requirements for licensure from the Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology & Hearing Aid Dispensers Board, California Department of Consumer Affairs, and for board certification by the American Board of Audiology.
All classes and clinics in the AuD Program meet at the Cal State LA Alhambra campus, 1000 S. Fremont Avenue, Building B-1 Suite B10200, Alhambra, CA.
The Robert L. Douglass Speech-Language Clinic is housed on the main university campus and the Cal State LA Hearing and Balance Clinic is housed on the Alhambra campus. Both clinics provide training facilities offering diagnostic and rehabilitative services.
Accreditation
The Master of Arts education program in speech-language pathology at California State University, Los Angeles is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard, #310, Rockville, MD 20850, 800-498-2071 or 301-296-5700.
The Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degree program is recognized as a developing status program by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE), 11480 Commerce Park Drive, Suite 220, Reston, VA 20191, 703-226-1056.
The department offers two courses which, along with the bachelor’s degree, can be used to apply to the state of California to receive the Speech-Language-Pathology Assistant (SLPA) License. These two courses are:
COMD 4960 Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) Pedagogy (3)
COMD 4965 Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) Practicum (3)
In addition to the programs listed below, the department offers coursework acceptable toward fulfillment of requirements for the interdisciplinary Undergraduate Certificate in Child Maltreatment and Family Violence offered by the Rongxiang Xu College of Health and Human Services.
