Overview
The College of Ethnic Studies (CoES) is composed of a community of faculty, staff, and students across three departments: Asian and Asian American Studies, Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies, and Pan African Studies. CoES offers a transformative educational experience grounded in the principles of academic excellence and the histories, cultures, struggles, and accomplishments of diasporic communities of color and Indigenous communities, making connections between the local and transnational.
The CoES offers undergraduate courses that meet a broad range of the University’s General Education requirements in the areas of Oral Communication, American Institutions, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Lifelong Understanding and Self-Development at the lower-division level, and in the areas of Arts and Humanities as well as the Social Sciences at the upper-division level. Students may pursue majors and minors in the three CoES departments, and the Department of Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies additionally offers a multiple subject teaching option for students interested in an elementary school teaching career and a Master of Arts degree for students who wish to pursue a Ph.D., teach at the college or university level, or pursue a range of professions.
In addition to active participation in a carefully-designed curriculum through which students gain new perspectives and strengthen abilities to think critically, students have access to research and community engagement opportunities with CoES faculty, many of whom are actively involved in community engaged and public scholarship. The faculty draw from this scholarship to enrich student curricular experiences. As a result, students completing a CoES degree are well-prepared to pursue graduate degrees and careers in social and public policy, public administration, education, law, the arts, and a broad range of other professions.
Mission Statement
The College of Ethnic Studies at California State University, Los Angeles was established in 2019 and is the first such college to be established at a university in the U.S. since 1969. The college develops leaders who engage in rigorous, self-reflexive study that motivates critical engagement, self-determination and decolonial understandings of the world. The college provides an interdisciplinary intellectual space that inspires students to transform inequities based on race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, ability, class, and the intersections among them, while advancing visions of social, political, and economic justice.
